Homework
1 hour per week. Everything I assign is optional,, I put the most suggested assignments chronologically. They have Interactive and traditional worksheets/summaries to choose from. I highly recommend that the learner and parent choose what's best for the learners learning style and school needs. Homework is optional and there will be various forms they can complete. Homework will have students practice vocabulary on Quizlet, Quizizz, or pdf worksheets. They will be able to practice interactive games, as well as complete worksheets or diagrams. All homework options will be shared after each class video directly on Outschool.
Assessment
Assessments and grades are available for weekly grades, optional homework grades, midterm and a final assessment will be provided as requested.
Grading
Weekly homework options = any hokework turned in I count for a grade, any not turned in simply won't be tallied. Midterm at week 9 option Final at week 18 option I can calculate an average for everything submitted and produce a certificate at the end of the course.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Are you interested in learning about the world around you? Do you ever wonder how scientist study the world and understand its' beauty? This 18 week self paced course will provide you the foundation of High School Biology concepts. We will explore important scientists who laid the groundwork for the progression of science today. Be ready to learn the important techniques, methods, and principles of understanding the world around you. We will look into for major units of study: cells, genetics, evolution and ecology. I will teach you the terminology, application to scenarios, real world data analysis, problem-solving, and understanding the relationships of the concepts. This class will cover the main areas of study that I typically teach in a traditional class setting. This class does require you to complete activities or worksheets outside of class.

Students will have the opportunity to have class discussions in a weekly forum on related topics. They will also be able to share summaries or graphic organizers with their peers via the classroom tab. This class is a self paced class set up and all post/communication will be made directly in the Outschool Classroom. Students can submit work via private classroom message. Students will be asked to answer relevant questions, based in their opinion, and discuss with peers what or why they find most interesting revolving the weekly content. Additionally, optional homework will be provided for students who would like to extend on the lesson. Students will have the option of a midterm assessment and a final assessment for the course.

Materials vary per week. The week of class you will receive materials ranging from guided notes, interactive activities, a copy of the vocabulary, worksheets, and a hyperdoc page with website links. Additional resources will be available to further practice outside of class. We will interact directly on the Outschool Classroom and use other resources as supplementary tools.

The objective of this class is to cover the majority of the year of Biology concepts that you would typically encounter in a High School Biology setting. This class does not include lab work. I do offer a separate course for Biology labs.

Students will participate in class each week by watching the video lesson, engage in interactive activities, then they will participate in peer discussion questions on the classroom page, and engage in pair and share opportunities to allow for more peer to peer engagement. Finally, I will send feedback and support opportunities on homework/discussion/pair and shares, and vocabulary practice.

Hi! I'm Abbie Butler, a passionate and experienced educator specializing in Life Sciences. I'd love to answer any questions you have – just send me a message!

My Expertise:
 * B.S. in Biology, AYA Teaching License (Grades 7-12) in Life Sciences (Muskingum University, 2013)
 * 10+ years teaching high school Life Sciences (Biology, Anatomy, Zoology, Oceanography, Nutrition, Botany, Horticulture, Environmental Science) and leading knit and crochet clubs.
 * 5+ years of online teaching experience (since 2018).
 * Experience tutoring for standardized science exams (OGT, OAA, NCSE, End of Course exams aligned with Ohio and NGSS standards).
 * 2 years of online ESL teaching.

My Classes:
I offer engaging and interactive classes in Anatomy, Biology, Zoology, Botany, Environmental Science, and lab-based topics. I also teach crochet to learners aged 12-18 and offer private tutoring.

My Teaching Style:
I believe in hands-on, student-centered learning. My lessons are interactive, incorporating practice and application throughout. A typical class structure involves short teaching segments using Quizizz or PowerPoint, followed by practice questions (multiple choice, diagrams, matching), then another short teaching segment with more practice, culminating in a review and summary.

About Me:
I'm a left-handed crocheter with 14 years of experience. I provide clear explanations, modeling, and supplemental YouTube videos to support your learning. I also enjoy biking, fishing, nature walks, baking (attempts!), crafting with my Cricut, and spending time with my family.

My Teaching Philosophy:
I'm committed to helping you achieve mastery and long-term retention of the material. I believe learning is most effective when you're actively involved. My classes are designed to be fun and engaging, leaving you confident in your new knowledge. Hyperdocs with Google Docs are used to share resources on the day of class.

Class Policies:
 * Cancellations: If a class doesn't meet minimum enrollment, I'll contact enrolled students to discuss options: proceed with the smaller class or transfer to another section. If no students arrive, I'll wait 5-10 minutes and then record the lesson for later viewing.
 * Refunds/Transfers: Most classes follow a "Limited" refund policy: refunds are available up to one week before the class or within 24 hours of purchase. After that, transfers are possible up to 24 hours before class. No-shows are not refunded but may receive a recording.
 * Recordings: I generally post recordings upon parent request or weekly, if I remember to post them automatically. Recordings are accessible in the classroom.
 * Flex Classes: I am currently revamping my flex class offerings. Recordings of live classes can be used with provided materials for self-paced learning.

Specials & Coupons: Check class descriptions for special offers!

Thank you for your interest! I look forward to seeing you in class!
