Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner Level
In this class, you will have 4 video lessons to watch and participate alongside. You will be asked to perform a lab using fresh fruit or frozen fruit, dish soap, salt, rubbing alcohol, and water. Then you will learn the history of DNA, the composition of DNA, the importance of DNA for living things, and about the process of replication.

The lessons in this course will go as followed:

Lesson 1: Conduct the experiment. Gather the supplies need - a fruit (2 strawberries, or a banana, or frozen fruit thawed to room temperature). I will be using 2 strawberries. Then you will need 2 cups, 2 teaspoons of soap, one teaspoon of salt, 1/2 of a cup of water, a coffee filter, a straw or stirring utensils such as a fork, and 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol *some students improvise by diluting some hand sanitizer with water*.
You will conduct the experiment with me. After the lesson, you will complete the Google Form and submit your lab results. Please feel free to message me at any time if you need assistance.

Lesson 2: In this lesson, you will learn about the building blocks of DNA- nucleotides, phosphates, sugars, and nitrogenous bases. We will practice naming the parts of DNA and complementary base pairing. You will complete a Google Form and an interactive game. You will be provided individual feedback for your form and game. Additionally, you will be asked to answer an exit ticket question on our Outschool Classroom page and ask any questions you have before you move forward.

Lesson 3 will discuss the purpose of DNA for living things. What is stored in our genetic material, where is it stored, and how is it stored. You will answer a few exit questions reflecting back to the lab to describe what your DNA looked like as well as checking your comprehension of the content.

Lesson 4 will discuss DNA replication and potential errors that could occur. We will end our lesson with a final interactive review game of the entire class and reflecting on our lesson/lab.
A hyperdoc will be provided that include my class videos, interactive games, activities, area for guided notes, exit ticket and any other resources used for class.

I hope to see you soon in class for a fun lab and lesson that is asynchronous and prerecorded over a 4 lesson videos that you can complete in your own time frame.

Hi! I'm Abbie Butler, a passionate and experienced educator specializing in Life Sciences. I'd love to answer any questions you have – just send me a message!

My Expertise:
 * B.S. in Biology, AYA Teaching License (Grades 7-12) in Life Sciences (Muskingum University, 2013)
 * 10+ years teaching high school Life Sciences (Biology, Anatomy, Zoology, Oceanography, Nutrition, Botany, Horticulture, Environmental Science) and leading knit and crochet clubs.
 * 5+ years of online teaching experience (since 2018).
 * Experience tutoring for standardized science exams (OGT, OAA, NCSE, End of Course exams aligned with Ohio and NGSS standards).
 * 2 years of online ESL teaching.

My Classes:
I offer engaging and interactive classes in Anatomy, Biology, Zoology, Botany, Environmental Science, and lab-based topics. I also teach crochet to learners aged 12-18 and offer private tutoring.

My Teaching Style:
I believe in hands-on, student-centered learning. My lessons are interactive, incorporating practice and application throughout. A typical class structure involves short teaching segments using Quizizz or PowerPoint, followed by practice questions (multiple choice, diagrams, matching), then another short teaching segment with more practice, culminating in a review and summary.

About Me:
I'm a left-handed crocheter with 14 years of experience. I provide clear explanations, modeling, and supplemental YouTube videos to support your learning. I also enjoy biking, fishing, nature walks, baking (attempts!), crafting with my Cricut, and spending time with my family.

My Teaching Philosophy:
I'm committed to helping you achieve mastery and long-term retention of the material. I believe learning is most effective when you're actively involved. My classes are designed to be fun and engaging, leaving you confident in your new knowledge. Hyperdocs with Google Docs are used to share resources on the day of class.

Class Policies:
 * Cancellations: If a class doesn't meet minimum enrollment, I'll contact enrolled students to discuss options: proceed with the smaller class or transfer to another section. If no students arrive, I'll wait 5-10 minutes and then record the lesson for later viewing.
 * Refunds/Transfers: Most classes follow a "Limited" refund policy: refunds are available up to one week before the class or within 24 hours of purchase. After that, transfers are possible up to 24 hours before class. No-shows are not refunded but may receive a recording.
 * Recordings: I generally post recordings upon parent request or weekly, if I remember to post them automatically. Recordings are accessible in the classroom.
 * Flex Classes: I am currently revamping my flex class offerings. Recordings of live classes can be used with provided materials for self-paced learning.

Specials & Coupons: Check class descriptions for special offers!

Thank you for your interest! I look forward to seeing you in class!

Sincerely,
Abbie
