This class will focus on fundamental concepts of fractions using pictures and visuals. Class topics will include: equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with like and unlike numerators and denominators, writing fractions on a number line, and writing improper fractions. This class is great for students who are just beginning to learn about fractions, as we will use many visuals and concrete representations of fractions.

The class will rotate through the topics listed above each month, with a different topic covered each week. The schedule will restart on the new month. This allows students continuous review and practice with the concepts, which will help them better understand and remember the material. The schedule for the course will be as follows:

First Week of the Month: We will learn about basic equivalent fractions. We will talk about why and how fractions can be equivalent, and we will look at visuals to aid in understanding. Students will practice finding some basic equivalent fractions.

Second Week of the Month: We will learn how to compare fractions. Because this is a beginning class, we will not typically be using common denominators. We will use visuals to help students develop a conceptual understanding. Students will practice comparing basic fractions with like and unlike numerators and denominators.

Third Week of the Month: We will learn how to write fractions on a number line. We will then review equivalent fractions and comparing fractions, but we will use a number line to help us solve questions.

Fourth Week of the Month: We will learn about improper fractions, including how to write them and what they mean. We will write improper fractions on a number line.

Fifth Week of the Month (for months that have a fifth week): We will review all of the concepts from the month, including: finding and writing equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with like and unlike numerators and denominators, writing fractions on a number line, and improper fractions.

We will repeat this pattern each month; repetition with these concepts will help students increase and solidify their understanding of the fundamentals of fractions, setting them up for success in future math classes.

We will work through the concepts together; I will show examples and help students with practice problems. If there is time, we will also play games to practice the concepts covered that day.

If students are comfortable with the basics of fractions that we cover in this course, we may occasionally go over more advanced concepts, such as finding common denominators and reducing fractions.
Metas de aprendizaje

Hello! So glad you are here! I am excited to be teaching on Outschool. I have taught elementary school for four years, with 1.5 of those years being online. I am currently teaching 6th grade science. I love teaching multiplication, division, fractions, phonics, science, and more! I love connecting with my students and helping them learn. It is very rewarding to see my students progress and grow. I believe that every child has potential, and I love helping them realize their potential.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from BYU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a minor in TESOL K-12 (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages). I also finished my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction through Western Governor’s University.

I love running, waterskiing, and my dog, Daisy! I also love music and play the piano and the violin.
