What happed to Confederate President Jefferson Davis after the Civil War ended? How did the Southern States return to being part of America? This course will seek to answer those questions in two meetings. The journey of President Lincoln's funeral train to Springfield, Illinois will also be mentioned.

My social studies classes start with a good youth history book. I prefer teaching in a seminar format. I present slides with a lot questions and answers with students, and ideally some good discussion. It is better to have read the book beforehand, but I realize that this is not possible for everyone, and the student will still learn the material without having done the readling. All of my classes include a quiz or two usually on Kahoot.it.
Metas de aprendizaje
This class is based on James L Swanson's youth history book, Bloody Times: The Funeral of Abraham Lincoln and the Manhunt for Jefferson Davis (160 pages). The first meeting we use Bloody Times as a class outline, and the second meeting will consider Reconstruction in America.

The second meeting will look at President Lincoln's plan to reunite the country after the war, and written before his death, the efforts of Notherners to shape the South after the war, The Freedman's Bureau, Black Codes, Jim Crow, and the legacy of these events today.

Orientación para padres
Sensitive learners should understand that Civil War History includes a lot of death and suffering, but I will not dwell in detail on those events. Lynching will be mentioned because it happened in the Jim Crow South until the 20th Century.
Lista de útiles escolares
Minimal preparation for the course should include watching an overview video such as Reconstruction from history.com https://www.history.com/topics/american-civil-war/reconstruction. I sometimes show these at the beginning if the students are unfamiliar with the topic.
