This course is inspired by John Malam's, Great Big Book of Pirates (2010), but the book is not required at all. We will look at the top pirates from history such as Blackbeard and Sir Henry Morgan and some of their exploits. We will have a Kahoot quiz and possibly another online game to retain the information we learn. - Because of literature and movies, most learners do not know what information about the Pirates of the Caribbean is real and what is myth. This course will drill down into the Real Pirates of the Caribbean. Our goal is to learn pirate history and to have fun doing it. The history of pirates is a lot bigger than what took place in the Carribean, but this class will focus on the so-called Golden Age of piracy in the Caribbean from about 1690 to 1730. What were these men like? What did they do? Why did piracy decline? These are some of the topics we will consider in this class.
I have taught middle school and high school student for nearly 200 hours on Outschool. Prior to that I taught high school and college students on college campuses. I avoid gratuitous material in my presentations and aim each lesson to a specific age group. History deals with harsh realities like piracy, presidential assassinations, racism, etc. This should be considered by parents enrolling their students in my classes.

The pirates committed atrocities and were generally bad people, but the level of detail about their crimes and treatment is aimed at late elementary and middle school students. The notoriousness of the pirates also adds interest to the topic, but sensitive learners could be disturbed by some of the details.
