Students will participate in a flexible course where we study "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. During the first six weeks, students will read and analyze the reading to show their understanding and comprehension of the material. Dahl's novel is full of important symbolism. While it is a short novel with a Lexile level of the novel is 810L (ranging from fifth grade to ninth grade), the level of analysis that accompanies the reading is better suited to the high middle school to middle high school grades. I encourage students who are new to analysis or struggle with it or students who are reading above their grade level to attend this class as the reading lends itself to learning analysis and symbolism. During the film portion of the course, students will analyze the film to compare and contrast it from the novel. So much of the baseline analysis that will need to be complete will be accomplished during our reading weeks. Students will view the film and will write a three-paragraph essay explaining how the film is both similar and different than the novel. The weekly schedule will focus on: Week One: - Establishing Characters (Analysis Sheet) - Discussing Character Symbolism (Classroom Board) - Analyzing the First Four Winners (Kahoot!) Week Two: - Discussing Charlie's Family and His Win (Analysis Sheet) - Introduction to Willy Wonka (Compare and Contrast Film Version Activity) - Interactions Between Children and Parents (Classroom Board) Week Three: - Discussing Oompa Loompa Songs (Listen to Film Versions and Comment) - Augustus Gloop's Demise (Symbolism) - The Chocolate Factory (Design Your Own Room and Share with Class) - Wonka's Personality (Add to Response from Last Week on Board) Week Four: - Violet Beauregarde and Veruca Salt's Demise (Discussion Board Comparison) - Children and Parents vs. Wonka (Theme Activity Mix and Match) Week Five: - Mike Teavee's Demise (Theme Activity) - The Parents Leave (Classroom Board) - The Resolution (Classroom Board) - What do you think is Dahl's message? (Classroom Activity) - What should we learn from our reading? Week Six: - View Tim Burton's film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (Watch at Home) - Not "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" - Analysis Questions to Guide Our Active Watching (Choose one to Post to Discussion) Week Seven: - Essay Comparing and Contrasting the Film and the Novel - Using Our Discussion Questions and Analysis Questions
