Tarea
4+ horas por semana. Students will be researching and writing a semester-long research paper. Most of the work will be done on their own including planning, researching, and writing their paper. Students should plan on spending about four to five hours a week on their research paper.
Evaluación
This course will have periodic assessments at Benchmark Points throughout the course at weeks. A final assessment will be given along with a final grade on their completed research paper. Benchmark assessments will be returned within 3-7 days. The final assessment will be returned with 1-2 weeks.
Calificación
A final grade will be provided. The grading matrix will be in the following areas: Topic, Research, Sources, Clarity, Continuity, Length, Content, Thesis and Support, Grammar, and Spelling.

Learn to write a Semester-long Term Paper in this 18-week class.

Research or Term Papers are an important skill to master for high school students. Students will follow the steps to research and write a semester-long Term Paper about an approved topic of their choosing. 

Papers will be 10-12 pages long, be typed and double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5" x 11"), with 1" margins on all sides. Include a page header at the top of every page.
Students will learn about and include standard citations.

Students will complete Benchmarks throughout the process.

This course is taught through a mixture of videos, explainer videos, worksheets, reading sheets, and assignments. Periodic Benchmark Assignments will submitted at regular intervals throughout the course for feedback and evaluation. Examples and tools will be posted on the class page to assist throughout the research and writing process. Teacher feedback will be provided via the Benchmark assignments.

Lección 1:
Introduction
 Discover what a Term Paper is and the process this class will follow in writing your paper. Explore the expectations of this course. Start to think about possible topics for your paper. Set your personal goals and schedule for your Term Paper.
Benchmark: Submit a brief, five paragraph essay or writing sample. 
Lección 2:
Choosing a Topic
 Explore your passions. Learn to distill your passions into potential topics for your Paper. Learn to do preliminary research into your potential topics. Narrow your topics down to three potentials. Benchmark: Submit your three potential topics for review. 
Lección 3:
Ask a Question
 Your Paper will answer a question about your topic. State three potential questions to be answered in your research. Conduct more preliminary research to validate your questions. 
Benchmark: Submit your three questions for review. 
Choose your topic and question for your paper.
Benchmark: Submit your topic and research question for approval. 
Lección 4:
Write your Thesis and Begin your Research
 Write your Preliminary Thesis.
Benchmark: Submit your Preliminary Thesis for feedback.
Learn how to do research. Learn how to properly organize and store your research. Learn the importance of documentation and citations.

Orientación para padres
Students will be writing a research paper based on their own interests. The topic must be approved by Annette the Teacher. Inappropriate topics will be rejected. These include, but are not limited to, topics involving sex, violence, abuse, and drug use.
Requisitos previos
Students should know how to write an essay prior to taking this class.

Students will need notebooks, note cards, or a virtual version of either for collecting and organizing their research.
Students will need access to a word processing program to complete their research paper. Handwritten papers will not be accepted.

Licenciatura en Sociología desde Minors: Biology, Chemistry, and Writing
Annette the Teacher has been teaching for a long time. She has over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. She has a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. She has homeschooled her own children from Pre-School through (their current) High School. All of her classes are interactive. Annette encourages students to fully participate in class. All of her classes feature hands-on activities and books Annette writes for the class herself.

Annette is a published writer, publisher, and artist. She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. She enjoys teaching science, history, art, and cooking classes. She brings history alive with her "Life in ..." history classes where students learn about key times in history by experiencing children and families' lives in that time period. "Paint like ..." art classes where students will learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. Kid Cuisine classes are cooking classes for Young Chefs based on historic foods and science topics. Students should be prepared to make, explore, and create during class. Annette knows hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.

Annette spent the first nine years of her professional life working in the medical field. She worked as a Transplant Coordinator, retrieving organs for transplantation, and she worked in research. When she was five years old she got her first microscope (which she still has). She also became obsessed with the brain at the age of five. She made her own model of the brain, which she also still has to this day.

Annette also has experience working with Special Needs children. She is Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs. She also has worked with children with ADHD. If your child has special needs, please contact Annette so she can work with you and your child.
