Welcome to Sign Language! This 5-week course will cover basic signs such as the alphabet, numbers, a brief history of ASL, food, animals, nature, work, and careers, and emotions. Deaf technology and other important topics about being an interpreter will be presented. The class will be an involved lecture that allows the students to participate during it. Questions will be asked during the review. During each class, we will review material from the previous week. Then we will go over the new topic and review it before the class is done. During the week, there will be fingerspelling words that students can practice along with other types of signs to work on memorizing. No previous experience is needed. *CAMERAS WILL NEED TO REMAIN ON DUE TO ASL BEING A VISUAL LANGUAGE. I cannot tell if a student is signing correctly if their camera is turned off. Here is a detailed list of what we will be studying each week: Day 1: The Alphabet, and Numbers from 0-10 Day 2: Hand Shapes, Numbers 11-20, the History of ASL Day 3: Basic Components of ASL, the Ear, and some Tips for Fingerspelling Practice Day 4: Family and Social Life Signs Day 5: Work and Careers Day 6: Food Day 7: Travel and Holidays Day 8: Sports and Recreation Day 9: Seasons, Time, and Weather Day 10: Emotions Day 11: Money and Shopping Day 12: Education Day 13: Health and Emergencies Day 14: Animals and Nature Day 15: Review Day! Learning a Deaf Joke.
Metas de aprendizaje
After students complete my class, they will have a deeper understanding about the deaf, their culture, and signs themselves. They will specifically learn how to make sentences, learn about how ASL began, and will work with me on becoming good interpreters through the signs they learn.
