Experiencia de clase

16 lessons//16 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Game Day: "Two Truths and One Lie"
Students will be asked to prepare three statements about themselves: two of the statements should be true and one should be a lie. They will sign their statements to class. After the statements are translated, which will be done as a class, each student will vote on which statement they think is untrue. It is a great way to get to know more about each other as well as to practice both expressive and receptive signing.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Iconography and Sign Classification
We will learn about signs that look like what they mean as well as signs that look nothing like what they mean (Iconic vs. Arbitrary). We will also discuss and learn about intialized and compound signs.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Directional/Indicating Signs
We will learn verb signs which can be used directionally to incorporate pronouns without the need to actually sign those pronouns.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Game Day: "ASL Jeopardy"
Students will play a game of ASL Jeopardy, covering topics talked about in the previous two classes as well as some general ASL knowledge questions which they should know the answers to at this point of study.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Past Tense
We will learn how to sign past tense statements, using various past tense markers.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Future Tense
We will learn to sign future tense statements utillizing future tense marker signs.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Game Day: "ASL Bingo"
Students will be given individual bingo cards (sent to them at some point during the week before class). Students will either need to print this card out, copy it down onto a blank sheet of paper, or play directly off of their computer screen. Signs will be randomly chosen and signed to students. Students will then mark each sign, as it is signed, on their card until they acheive a BINGO.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Grammar & Syntax: The Sentence
We will learn about general ASL sentence structure as well as different ways a statement can be organized in sign language.
 Week 9
Lesson 9
Grammar & Syntax: The Question
We will learn about how to organize a question in sign language. Specifically, we will learn about three different types of questions: the yes/no question, the wh-question and the rhetorical question.
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Game Day: "Alpha Sign"
For this game, students will randomly be given a handshape from the manual ASL alphabet and then asked to produce a sign which uses that handshape in its sign. For example, if the student receives the handshape of the letter "A", they might choose to sign "girl" or "yesterday" or "aunt".
 Week 11
Lesson 11
Introduction to Classifiers
We will learn about classifiers: what they are and how to use them.
 Week 12
Lesson 12
Classifiers (Pt. 2)
We will learn about different handshapes and what they might be used to represent as well as continue practice using classifiers in signed conversation.
 Week 13
Lesson 13
Game Day: "Wheels of Fortune"
During this game, students will spin three wheels. Each wheel will have one word/sign on it. The teacher will show the students how to sign each of the three words and then the student will have to create a signed sentence utillizing all three signs.
 Week 14
Lesson 14
Introduction to Mouth Morphemes
We will learn about different mouth morphemes, starting with morphemes that help express size and moving on to other common morphemes as time allows.
 Week 15
Lesson 15
Final Test Review Game: Spin the Wheel
Our last game day will be a review of all the things we have learned over the course of the last 14 weeks. This will be a prep for the final test the following week.
 Week 16
Lesson 16
Final Test
The final test for this course will take place through the Kahoot! app. Students will not need to have the Kahoot! app downloaded in order to take this test. The test will be administered by me (the teacher). The teacher (I) will be present for the entirety of the test.
Esta clase se imparte en Inglés.
  • Learning outcomes will include the following: Engage in more advanced conversations using ASL, translate English into ASL and vice versa, understand the use of classifiers within ASL and comprehend how to sign using different tenses.
I grew up with a Deaf family member. I learned the basics of American Sign Language at a very young age and found it incredibly helpful as I moved through childhood and into adulthood. I could communicate with other children who were clearly frustrated that no one either could or was willing to take the time and make the effort to interact with them. As an adult, I studied American Sign Language in college so that I could better communicate with the many deaf and hearing impaired members of my community.

Detalles: There will be classroom exercises throughout the 16-week course. I will assess each student both individually and assess the needs of that student and the larger group unit as well. Assessments will also be made during games and/or quizzes held during class: I will use these assessments to determine if one area of study needs more or less focus and adjust the class according to the learners' needs. If a parent/guardian would like a completed progress report at the end of class, one will be provided to them (please reach out and request one from the teacher as they are not normally given).
Handouts will be provided for students throughout the duration of the course.
Please note that my classes are inclusive of everyone and, therefore, if questions arise from students as to how to sign about gender neutral and/or non-binary identification signs, those questions will absolutely be answered. If this is something that makes you or your learner(s) uncomfortable, please consider a different ASL course.
