You Be the Judge: Act as a Judge and Apply Constitutional Amendments to Cases

Social Studies Center
Average rating:4.9Number of reviews:(661)
In this class, each week, students will be introduced to a right protected by the Amendments to the US Constitution. Then, they will use critical thinking skills to apply precedents established by the courts to a modern case.

Class experience

Students will learn about a right or several rights in the Amendments to the Constitution and how the courts apply them. They will learn about it so that they can apply it to a real case.
Social Studies Center is led by Laura Forde, who has been a teacher since 2003. She has attended numerous trainings on the Constitution and Amendments as well as the courts and specific cases. She has attended Street Law's week-long seminar on the courts, been trained by the Center for Civic Education, and done an in-depth study of the state courts. Shannon Sorenson is also teaching this class. She has a Master's in History as a James Madison Scholar. Shannon also teachers AP government classes and has been trained by the Center for Civic Education and had students compete in the We the People competitions, which requires students to have extensive knowledge of the constitution which Shannon has taught them.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Some of the cases deal with serious crimes. However, the crimes themselves are not the focus so there is not much detail besides the fact that the case deals with murder, drugs, or something along those lines.
The students will not need materials. Everything will be provided by the educator.
