Beginner Level
Led by a former Special Education teacher, this course is specially designed for students with disabilities, providing highly structured instruction using visual prompts, repetition, and differentiated scaffolding. Guided by the "I do, we do, you do" model of instruction, we'll explore the power of visual storytelling. Prepare to sharpen your observation skills as we examine each picture, discussing its elements and brainstorming what might be happening. Throughout the class, we'll foster an inclusive and supportive environment, ensuring every student's voice is heard. Open-ended questions will spark your imagination, allowing you to develop your own unique ideas and storylines. You'll have "Think Time" to unleash your creativity before sharing your thoughts. As the class progresses, you'll bring your ideas to life through your very own sentences. Sentence starters and a word bank will be provided to fuel your writing journey. If you need help with spelling or additional prompts, support will be readily available. Specific instruction will be offered to help identify nouns, adjectives, and verbs that might be used in your writing. Aim to write 3-5 sentences, expressing your thoughts and creating captivating narratives. Note: This class is not about grading or strict rules of writing. It's about nurturing your creative spirit and allowing your imagination to thrive. Your stories are expressions of your unique voice, and while submissions are not required, feedback and suggestions from the instructor will be gladly provided if desired. Please note this is not a "how to write" course. It is an opportunity for those creative spirits to express themselves in writing. Stories will not be graded however if a student would like to submit their writing, I am happy to respond with suggestions. If everyone finishes before the class time ends, we will play word games and learners can share their writing.
Learning Goals
Create complete sentences using a picture as a prompt
Other Details
Learning Needs
Class designed to scaffold learning for all learners.
Parental Guidance
I will be using Google slides for the picture prompts and handouts that will need to be printed prior to class.
Pre-Requisites
While handwriting skills can help, students may dictate their sentences.
Supply List
Because this class focuses on writing, students must have some means to write. This can be a notebook, loose leaf paper, using Google docs in a separate tab, or having someone transcribe for them (such as a parent sitting out of view). I strongly suggest NOT using unlined paper. If your learner is working on their handwriting, I suggest this journal: https://www.amazon.com/Mead-Composition-Notebook-Primary-09902/dp/B001F38YWM/ref=psdc_12900091_t1_B003U6SCHE If your learner is able to print neatly or uses cursive, I suggest this journal: https://www.amazon.com/Mead-Composition-Notebook-Primary-09902/dp/B001F38YWM/ref=psdc_12900091_t1_B003U6SCHE If your learner prefers to type, please make sure they know how to resize their tabs to see their writing and the class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
