Class Experience

I run a YouTube channel called: Insectopia that has 1k subscribers and posts educational insect content 2-3 times per week. I look forward to teaching your learner how to create fun professional YouTube videos using free or low budget programs. Make sure your learner comes with an idea for their video. My videos are insect related and educational but yours can be any topic that you would like! If you would like to screen record a game, I can teach you how to do that too! If you choose to do a gaming video, remember please DO NOT share your gaming handle with the class.

Students should come prepared with a way to take notes whether that is paper and pencil or electronic. This series is content heavy. One of the things I really love about this course is that students get a group of like-minded peers to bounce ideas off of and help improve their work. Learners should come prepared to work in a collaborative setting both taking and giving comments and critiques. Let's help build eachother up! (and make a cool video while we do so.)

Week 1: Writing and Recording a Script
In the first week we will discuss video lengths, scripts, and audio recording tips and tricks. We will have some discussion time to help students work through their ideas. Students will have time in class to start writing their script. Students who plan on unscripted videos can use this time to write up a video timeline. Students will submit their scripts and timelines in the class page to allow their peers to read and suggest edits. Their homework will be to record the audio for their video.
Homework expected time: 30-45 minutes

Week 2: Storyboarding Your Video
In the second week we will be reading over your script and storyboarding your video. This looks differently for everyone, but it is exciting to do it together and share your ideas. If you are making a whiteboard video, a series of pictures will be enough. If you are recording an unscripted video, your storyboard may include a quick drawing of your intro and outro along with what you expect the framing in your video to look like. If you plan on using graphics on OBS, now is a good time to create them. Your homework will be to finish your storyboard and prepare to record.
Homework expected time: 1 hr

Week 3: Recording Your Video
This third week we get to talk about recording your video! Those who are building whiteboard videos will not have to worry about lighting their space. We will be introducing the free video editing program Filmora. Which we will be using to screen record while we draw, game, etc to catch our raw video file. If you have chosen another recording method ie: cameras, lights, etc. We can talk about light placement and green screen use. Learners homework will be to record their video's raw content.
Homework expected time: 1-1.5 hrs

Week 4: Editing Your Video
This week we are taking the raw footage from last week and importing it into our video editing program. I will give a walkthrough of the video editing tools available to us and where to find them in Filmora. Make sure that your video has a quick introduction, eye catching content, and a call to action of some kind at the end. If you choose to purchase the Filmora program, you will be able to export your videos without a watermark. If you are using the free version of Filmora, your video will have a Filmora watermark. Your homework will be to finish editing your video, this is the longest part of the process but is pretty simple after you get going.
Homework expected time: 3-5 hrs (or longer depending on the video you choose)

Week 5: Publication of Your Video
This week we talk about the strategy behind your video titles and other tips and tricks. Should you upload your "cc"? How long should the description be? Do tags really matter? We will be putting all of these questions to rest on day 5 when we discuss how to finish the process.
Homework expected time: 1 hr

Learning Goals

Students will learn and get hands on experience with the entire process of video creation from start to finish. This includes: script writing, audio recording, storyboarding, recording content, video editing, and publication.

Supply List
Filmora is a free to use video editing software. When you are exporting your video, it will have a Filmora watermark. If you want to export your video without the watermark, you will have to pay for the program. It is a $90 one time fee and you will have it forever. Most video editors charge monthly so I find that this is the most affordable high quality software available. Follow this link to download: https://filmora.wondershare.com/invite-new-user.html?invite_code=eyJ1aWQiOjIxMDAxODYwNywibmlja25hbWUiOiJUcmlzaGEifQ==

Paint.Net is my preferred drawing program. It is free to download and use. If you have a program you already like, no need to change. If you would like to use what I am using, you can find the link here: https://www.getpaint.net/download.html#download

If your student will not be drawing their video, they may also want to download OBS, which is a free video recording program for streaming and graphic video design. Follow this link to download: https://obsproject.com/

Students should come prepared with either a paper and pencil or a word document to take notes and scratch out ideas. This series is content heavy.
