Web Design for Girls: Create a Beautiful Website Using Google Sites (Beginners)

This one day course for girls will teach students the basics of Google Sites in order to produce a one of a kind website on a topic that each student is passionate about. No experience with web design or Google Sites is necessary, however, a Google account with access to Google Sites www.sites.google.com is required in order to participate in this class. Main topics to be covered include how to create pages and subpages and how to insert text, images, and video in order to produce a beautiful website. In addition, we will discuss web design principles such as layout, flow, and accessibility. The class is structured so that all students participate in an introduction and then learn a brief history of women in web design. Students will follow along via screen sharing as the instructor walks them through the steps of creating their own website using Google Sites. Students will be instructed to split their screen so that they are able to view the Zoom screen share on one side, and can follow along in Google Sites on the other. While students work on their website the instructor will guide students in discussions pertaining to females in web design and we will each share about our passions that we are spotlighting on our individual websites. At the end of class, students will have a few minutes each to share the progress that they've made on their website if they wish. This is an introductory course, students will leave with the beginnings of a beautiful and unique website of their own creation. ***A Google account is required to participate in this class ***Students under the age of 13 will need access to either a Google for Education account or permission to use a parent's account under supervision.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to create a one of a kind website on a topic of their choosing using the free, online tool, Google Sites. In this course students will learn the steps required to make an informative website on a topic that they are passionate about using the web design tools in Google Sites. They will learn how to create pages and subpages, insert text, images, and videos. In addition, the students will learn about basic web design principles such as website layout, flow, and accessibility. We will also discuss famous females in the web design industry.

Parental Guidance
Google Accounts require that users be 13 years or older. Students will need access to a parent account (under parental guidance), or educational Google account in order to participate in this class.

Students will need access to a free Google Account as well as Google Sites. Google accounts require that users be age 13 years or older, if your students is younger than 13 they will need access to a parent's Google account or an educational Google account through school. Students will also need to work from a computer or laptop. Tablets and phone screens will not work for this lesson. While not required, it is highly recommended that students have and use a mouse during class for better precision during the creation process.

I am an instructional technology specialist working with students ranging from preschool through 12th grade. I primarily teach STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) content and am passionate about bringing technology and art together to make beautiful and unique pieces. As a teacher and technology specialist, I am always looking for fun and free ways for students to pursue their hobbies and Google Sites is an excellent tool that can help students that are interested in web design. I have taught web design with students in grades 5-12 using tools such as Google Sites to assist with classroom projects, provide students with an artistic outlet, and just for fun! I've led girls camps in web design for many years with great success and I can't wait to share my knowledge and passion for Google Sites and web design with your student.
