Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this one-time class, we will a create a body oil, a salt scrub, and a bath bomb! With a few simple ingredients, we will combine, mix, and create our own relaxing bath & body products, which also make perfect gifts! First, we will observe and discuss how to combine different ingredients in order to make something new. Next, we will gather our ingredients and begin the process of creating a body oil, a salt scrub, and a bath bomb! We will add food coloring and scent if desired. After creating, we will put them into containers which can be decorated for the perfect gift. After our bath & body products are complete, we will engage in a discussion in which each learner will have the option to show their unique creations with the group and talk about it. This concluding activity promotes positive discussion, strengthening communication as well as critical thinking skills.
Learning Goals
This lesson provides several positive learning outcomes. By creating an original mixture with common ingredients, the learners are able to understand how art and science are utilized in our world and even often combined. By observing and discussing these concepts, the learners are also able to gain a deeper understanding of how to create their own artistic variations using similar ingredients. Other learning outcomes include positive communication and critical thinking skills. Group discussion during the presentation and activity promotes positive communication, as does showing the bath salts in the concluding discussion. Additionally, the learners will utilize critical thinking skills by applying, analyzing and synthesizing their prior knowledge and experiences into the class discussion as well as into the unique bath & body products they create.
