In this 4-day camp students will learn about the history of letter writing and write four letters of their own.
Class experience
In this 4-day class students will learn about the history of letter writing, and have the opportunity to write four letters of their own. Each class will begin with a brief reading of excerpts from genuine historical letters, focusing on a different topic each day. We will discuss variations on the topic and ways that the student can personalize it to themselves and to their letter's recipient. Then we will take time in class to begin our own letters, writing for a minimum of ten minutes at...
Students will learn to choose subject matter from their own knowledge and experience, and convey it as clearly as possible to a specific reader by developing the important writing skills of description and narrative coherence. Students will be asked to read at least a portion of their writing in class, or, for shy speakers, to type a few sentences into the classroom chat feature. Guidance will be offered in the form of questions, not in the form of critique.
Paper and a writing utensil. Envelopes and stamps will be needed, but not actually used in class.
