Homework
1-2 hours per week. Each week, the learner will be assigned a writing prompt that is relevant to the day's lesson in their individualized plan.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
In this one-on-one writing help course, individual students will work with me on their specific writing needs based. Parents will need to communicate with me as to what they want to work on with the students so I can create an individualized lesson plan for their learner. They will then be presented with an informal "syllabus" with their learner's individualized writing plan. Each week will be compromised of a mini-prompt to start off class, the week's lesson, and a homework assignment pertaining to the lesson given that week. However, this can be tweaked if necessary and goals will align with the student's needs. An example lesson plan for each week would look like this: Week 3, Persuasive Writing and Debate This Week’s Mini-Prompt, Flash Nonfiction: Since today’s lesson is about persuasion and debate, we will start the lesson with a small nonfiction prompt where the student will write about a time where they disagreed with a friend or family member and how it resolved. This could be in a simple descriptive paragraph, or the student could include dialogue/conversation in the text as well. We will take about 10 minutes on this assignment. This Week’s Lesson, How to Write Persuasively and Subjectively: We will discuss effective ways to write persuasively while avoiding the accursed “I” statements from our vocabulary, conveying our beliefs and agendas through well-written arguments rather than just stating our opinions. We will also talk about the value of writing from multiple perspectives and learning how to approach arguments from different angles than our own beliefs without using bias in our writing. This Week’s Homework Assignment, Fictional Double Debate: The student will be able to choose a fictional event (either one from a piece of media that already exists or from their own imagination) and write persuasive arguments from two different perspectives. For example, if the student chose to talk about the Gem War in Steven Universe, they could write from the perspectives of a character in favor of the Gem War and a character against it. The objective of the assignment is to make it as hard as possible for me, the teacher, to decide who “wins” the fictional debate. Each take needs to be a minimum of six sentences, for a total of 12 sentences for the assignment. The learner's progress will be tracked by me and I will provide feedback to the parent about their learner's work in the class upon the conclusion of the session length.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their writing abilities through an individualized plan, focusing on areas for development. Students will also learn how to edit, draft, and use citations in their writing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, all! I'm Carina (pronouns: they/them/theirs) and I'm so excited to spread the magic of the written word. I hold a BFA in Creative Writing with minor certifications in Gender Studies and Women's Leadership, an MSLS in Library and Information Science, and an MA in Literary and Cultural Studies.
As a queer, autistic, disabled adult with ADHD, I know how difficult the world can be to navigate when you struggle with feeling accepted or seen by media. Growing up, I never felt like my teachers understood my struggles. To end that cycle, I do my best to elevate students regardless of their divergences, mental illnesses, or other possible hindrances or marginalizing factors. I prioritize diverse narratives and take a gentle approach in literary analysis that allows all kids to thrive and grow.
I focus on creative writing, literary theory, and media analysis, but also will work flexibly with students on editing, paper structure, citation help, and information literacy. I especially enjoy exploring popular culture through television, film, and video game studies, as well as Socratic discussion on current trends in young adult literature. My research interests are animation, film studies, queer media theory, and transfeminism, and I am always open to tailoring classes directly to students in these fields.
I take a holistic approach to writing and teaching, and truly believe in the healing power of writing, reading, and honest critical analysis. I believe young people are some of the most creative, innovative people in the world and deserve space to explore their imagination. Literary theory is a remarkable thing, and you’re never too young to start thinking critically about the media you consume.
When I'm not teaching, I work as a teen librarian in a public library and as a freelance writer. I love reading anything I can get my hands on, watching anime, playing video games (Animal Crossing is my favorite!), coming up with new recipes, and creating art!
