If a parent wants a formal assessment, please ask. Otherwise, I will be constantly assessing where a student is and the progress they have made. I will reach out with informal progress updates if I feel it is necessary. I will also post notes in the classroom after each class. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time too to inquire about your child's progress.Class Experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 5
When first learning to read, children do best with shorter instruction that is tailored to their needs and they thrive with individual attention. I love to work with younger age groups because they get so excited each time they understand a new concept. Often times, young children have a hard time staying focused in longer classes so it is not necessary to lengthen their time learning, especially when they are receiving one-on-one instruction. I am willing to create a longer session for any parent that reaches out and inquires about doing so but, in my experience with this age group, this amount of time is perfect. You may also sign up for more than one time slot, there will be at least a 10 minute break in between classes. I will likely assess each student during our first session to see where they are in their reading journey and how I can best help them. It will be helpful if parents reach out to me by email before our first class to let me know what their goals are for their child. Once I have assessed a student and considered parent input, I will develop a plan specifically for that student. I use lessons I have created as well as other materials to meet a student's needs. The main struggles with reading often come with missing specific steps each student needs to build a strong foundation. Students must first learn letter shapes and sounds. Next, letter patterns are important such as in cat/hat/bat. Then blends, digraphs, diphthongs, vowel teams and vowel consonant e all come into play. We will work through each step from where the student currently is. For students who can already read but who need more instruction in or practice with vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, I now offer an advanced reading tutoring class that is 30 minutes for each session, it might be a better fit. You are welcome to still sign up for a 20 minute slot for these students if it works better for your schedule. My 30 minute class is also suitable for students who are still learning their beginning reading skills but who can stay focused for a longer period of time. I have been teaching children to read for more than 18 years. I started by leading a first grade reading group for an entire school year when I was younger. I taught in a brick and mortar classroom for 7 years. I worked in a tutoring center for more than 3 years. I ran a children’s ministry for 2 years. I have now been teaching online for 3 years on other platforms, primarily as a reading tutor, while I also homeschool my own children. If you need a time and you do not see that time available, please reach out to me. I will do my best to work with you to make it happen if I can. You are also welcome to sign up for any time in my open availability. This class can be extended for as long as tutoring is needed and can also be cancelled anytime. Thank you for considering me! _______________________________________________________________________________ learn to read, reading tutoring, one on one tutoring, individual reading instruction, Science of Reading
