Class Experience
This class will discuss the concept and purpose of word problems, teach tips for identifying key words, and provide hands on practice during class. Various types of Integer word problems will be introduced and solved, both together and independently. Types of word problems include multiplication, division, decimal, and percent. Students enrolling in this class should have a good understanding of math facts: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Students will build skill and confidence in solving word problems through knowledge, practice, and using a simple and systematic approach.
Math is like a foreign language when it is first introduced to students. As they progress to pre-algebra and beyond, that language becomes more complex with words and formulas they have never heard before. My approach to teaching math is two-fold. I emphasize not only facts and formulas, but also the concept being taught. I have found that when students will learn their facts and formulas without a good understanding of the concept, they get confused on when to use them. I believe that learning concepts along with the facts and formulas is the bridge to success and confidence in math.
Students will be given practice problems to complete during the class, no homework will be assigned
Students should have a pencil and several sheets of paper. A whiteboard is optional
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
