Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
This five week class will introduce Word Mapping to your beginning speller. We will focus on short vowels and digraphs. I will be available the entire month to answer any questions your child might have and to provide feedback and encouragement.

* If you have an older child who is struggling with spelling, please look at my "Spelling Boot Camp: 5 Rules to Improve Spelling" FLEX class. This class is targeting for very beginning spelling help.

Has your Kindergartner, First, or Second Grader learned how to read CVC short vowel words but spelling is still a struggle? In this Flex class, students will practice word mapping to unblend words, break them into their sounds, and then spell the words accordingly. This method, which perfectly aligns with the Science of Reading, will help young learners realize the sound to letter correspondence that often needs to be explicitly taught. Students who learn this skill greatly increase their odds of spelling words correctly.

This class will begin with phonological awareness activities that have been proven to be crucial for spelling development. Students have a much better chance of spelling words correctly if they are able to break words into sounds and manipulate those sounds in the absence of print. Each week will focus on adding one consonant digraph to the words we spell and provide ample opportunities for practice by breaking down the pattern, practicing writing the words, and playing games to reinforce the learned spelling rule. Each of the four weeks, two different lessons will be presented to teach and reinforce spelling the consonant digraph being taught. My dyslexia specialist training, which is Orton-Gillingham based, is not only beneficial for dyslexic students but for any struggling reader or speller. My main goal is for each student to leave feeling more confident in their spelling! I've witnessed time and time again that the more confident a child becomes, the faster spelling growth occurs.

Striving to add an element of entertainment to the class, my pug dog Cookie will be a regular visitor during our sessions. Many of my students' parents tell me that their child can't wait to log on to see what costume Cookie will be dressed in that day! (The best part is the stoic look on his face regardless of the outfit! Haha)

I will also provide assignments for your student to complete and turn in to me if you would like that to be a part of the class. I will vary these assignments according to the age of your child.

Hello! My name is Ms. Deb and I am thrilled to be offering classes at Outschool. I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Educational Psychology. I also have over 150 hours of Orton Gillingham based training in reading strategies specifically targeted to dyslexic students. (Which are beneficial to all beginning readers.) I have been a dyslexia specialist for twelve years in the public school setting and have privately tutored students for the past fifteen years. I have a heart for working with dyslexic students and their families.

Working with dyslexic students and struggling readers isn’t just a career. It is a personal passion of mine because I have been through the gamut of emotions with my own child. I know the feeling of having a child that is really bright but is struggling in school and not knowing where to turn for help. I also know the joyous rewards of intervention and compassionate teachers that believed in my child. I know how that one teacher can touch your child’s life and ease your anxiety as a parent. I know the proud feeling of seeing your formerly struggling child advocating for himself. I’ve been through the journey. It is so amazing to be able to look my students’ parents in the eye at the beginning of their journey and say, “Time and time again I’ve seen reading intervention work. I will be your partner through this process.”
