Description
Class Experience
This class will focus on the nine different ways we have to spell the Long A sound like in the word "paint". Students will sort a word list of Long A words into the different spellings, paying careful attention to the exact letters that represent that sound. We then connect how knowing these spellings helps them read new words that include them. For example, knowing that Long A can be spelled with -ei, a student can figure out a new word like VEIL much faster than if they tried to sound out each individual letter. We will also discuss other sounds that some of the nine spellings represent and how to cope with them when decoding new words.
This is one of my most eye-opening lessons I teach within the Phono-graphix method of teaching reading. It makes students very aware of why our language can be difficult to read and spell. I have been teaching this lesson with my private students for over 20 years and I've seen great improvements with student reading after this lesson.
Students will generate their own lists of Long A words from their daily reading and sort them into their lists. Completed work can be shared with the teacher for feedback. Feedback will also include a recommendation for other classes that are related to these skills.
The student only needs a pencil and paper for this lesson. Any handouts the student needs will be provided in the classroom. Students may have an opportunity to use Zoom's annotate feature while we read stories featuring the /ae/ sound. If your child would like to engage in that whole group activity, please make sure that they know how to use the annotate feature.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
