Homework

1 hour per week. Students will receive homework on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6

Students will meet 2 times as week for 45 minutes each class. The class will have interactive games and depending on class size there will be group activities as well. Each week students will have a different spelling list and learn new grammar rules. 

My goal is to find patterns where students are struggling and adjust lessons to fit their needs and support them with individual homework assignments that fit their needs. 

When a student first joins they will be given a diagnostic spelling and grammar test so I can see what areas they need help in.  Based off of the results of the class we will then begin weekly lessons. See below for examples.

Here is a sample week:

*Monday: Pre-Test and Grammar Lesson
- Students will be given a pre-test on 10-15 words. Words may carry over from a previous week if a student got the wrong answer on the actual test the week before. 
- Students will be presented with a new grammar topic. We may cover topics such as parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, singular vs plural, pronouns, synonyms/antonyms, ABC order, sentence types. Complete sentences, tenses, etc.

*Wednesday: Supporting Spelling activities, and Practice Grammar
- Wednesday’s are our practice days. Students will play games with each other that support learning the topics of the week. Example games include BattleShip, Hangman, Bingo, Memory, Beat the Teacher, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, etc.

Students will also practice writing sentences/paragraphs depending on their level.

*Alternating weeks : Review, Test
- students will receive a quick review of any concepts and have an opportunity to ask questions before taking the test. 


Homework/practice assignments will be posted each week. They are optional, but struggling learners should complete them. We will not go over there in class. Students can upload their assignments to me and I will review. If needed we will set up office hours for further review. 

Holidays: I have tried to account for traditional holiday schedules. If your student needs time off for other holidays/reasons during the semester please let me know and I will work with you to make up any days missed.

Hi! My name is Kathy and I live in Southern California. I love working with students all around the World and of all different ages. I mainly teach classes that are Language Arts based (reading, writing, spelling, and grammar). I also teach about Historical figures, especially if I can tie them into Literature. I also love teaching about animals, and doing story time for the younger kids.

I have been teaching for over 15 years. I have taught in traditional school settings, charter schools, home schooled my own children, and taught online. I have a BA in English as well as a K-12 Teaching Credential. I am very passionate about helping people learn to love reading and writing. I also love to help people that need a little extra help with spelling and grammar. It makes me so proud and happy to have a student tell me how much they think they are improving or to get answers correct on something they missed before.

My approach to teaching is interactive and hands on. I want my students to learn while having fun. I ask a lot of comprehension questions, group work, pair work, and projects (depending on the class). I try to do as much of the work in class as possible so that kids can still be kids once they are done.

 My background is in English but I love History and Science too (especially the experiments). It wouldn't be unusual in one of my classes to have to make something that just pops into my mind because it seems fun. I love animals, chocolate, and all things Disney!
