Space Mission 9: Walking on the Moon (Semester Course)
Class experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Follows Teacher-Created Curriculum
As Space is becoming increasingly important in most countries around the world, especially given the amount of Space travel that has recently increased, it is more and more important for our children to know, at least basic knowledge about the Space around us, especially about our closest neighbors in space, including our Moon. Exploring and learning about space has never been more interesting, fun, and exciting as it is today! We can all be explorers! Schedule Outline: Day 1: We begin our...

Unit 1Introduction to Our MoonIntroduction to Our Moon2 lessons2 WeeksWeek 1Lesson 1Introducing the MoonWe begin our SM 9 class with an introduction to Earth’s Moon, learning its name, location, and how it orbits around Earth, as well as how it helps Earth. Terminology Learned: Orbit, Natural Satellite, Synchronous Rotation, Tidal Locked, Near-Side, Far-SideWeek 2Lesson 2The Moon's StructureToday begins with a review over information covered during our first class, then we discover the 3 basic layers of the Moon and what they are made of, as we dive deep inside its structure. Students will learn to identify each layer from the Crust to its solid Core. Terminology Learned: Crust, Upper Mantle, Lower Mantle, Partial Melt, Outer Core, Inner Core, Zone of Partial Melt, Basalts, Regolith, Seas-Maria, & Mascons.Unit 2Mysteries, Facts, & Gravity of our MoonMysteries, Facts, & Gravity of our Moon2 lessons2 WeeksWeek 3Lesson 3Gravity of the MoonToday we explore the Moon’s gravity, how it influences movement on the Lunar surface, as well as how its gravity affects Earth. Then we will have fun discovering how high we can jump on the surface of the Moon. We then will be introduced to the phases of the Moon as seen from Earth. Terminology Learned: Gravity, Gravitational Field, New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, & Waning Crescent.Week 4Lesson 4Mysteries & Facts about our MoonDuring this fourth class, we discuss some little-known facts about the Moon & then students will participate in an amazing class review game. Students will be invited to review the layers of the structure of the Moon, its gravity, and other facts we have learned as we play a fun & interactive game, online as a class.Unit 3Human Exploration to the MoonHuman Exploration to the Moon2 lessons2 WeeksWeek 5Lesson 5Human Exploration of our MoonOur fifth class begins the Exploration part of our journey to the Moon, as we explore early unmanned missions to the moon, including the types of missions, along with key data and information attained from these missions. Terminology Learned: Launch, Failure, Successful, Orbiter, Impactor, Flyby, Lander, Rover, Launch Vehicle, & Sample ReturnWeek 6Lesson 6Missions to the MoonThis class begins with a review of the information covered in our Class #5, then continues to examine the various missions to the moon. During this class, we begin learning about the failed & successful crewed missions to the moon. Terminology Learned: Crewed Orbiter, Crewed Mission, & Crewed LandingUnit 4Walking on the Moon & Into the FutureWalking on the Moon & Into the Future2 lessons2 WeeksWeek 7Lesson 7Walking on the MoonDuring this class, we will be walking on the Moon with the Apollo Missions! We will discover basic discoveries made during these missions, as well as the names of the astronauts who have walked on the moon.Week 8Lesson 8The Future of the Moon & ReviewFor our last class, we will wrap up our trip to the Moon by discussing its future. As a class, we will talk about the future Moon base/s, human tourism to the Moon, and more. The sky is no limit as each learner will contribute their ideas for what might happen to/with our Moon in the next 50, 100, or 1,000 years! Afterwards, we will play a fun, interactive review game.
Students will be able to identify the layers of the moon; ways in which the moons helps our planet; the phases of the moon; as well as the various manned and unmanned missions humans have sent to the Moon; what they have discovered; and about NASA & other Space Agencies’ plans are for the future of the Moon.
I have always had a love of space, from the moment my grandpa, an amateur astronomer, let me look through the 10-foot telescope he built all by himself, to watching shuttles & satellites lift into the sky, and watching some fall back to the earth. I have spotted some of the largest dust storms to hit Mars, and have enjoyed looking at the various craters on our Moon and seeing the rings around Saturn, all from my own backyard in Missouri & while using other telescopes my grandpa and I built together. I have never ceased my exploration and search, looking to the skies to watch for eclipses, comets, and so much more! My love of all things Space has only increased with time, and I feel it is the next great wave of the future! As a teacher with a Master’s Degree in Teaching & over 30 years of experience working with children of various ages, and more than 5 years teaching students about Space, as well as other Science-related subject-matter, I love sharing my knowledge with the next generation. My hope is to instill the awe-inspiring beauty the Unknown Universe holds, as well as encourage students to dream and believe! I hope to see you in class as we walk on the Moon together!

Any learning materials needed will be available for download in the Outschool classroom.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will need their cameras turned on for each class. Parents may need to assist their child in learning how to "mute & unmute" themselves, as teacher will mute students at times during the "teaching" portion of our class & then ask them to "unmute" to answer questions & interact with the other learners during the interactive, conversational, and review portion of our class. This allows each learner the opportunity to hear what is taught, while still allowing for questions, interaction and such. YouTube video clips will be shown at times during our class to allow learners to visualize the topics being covered. The links to these videos will be available after the class for parents & learners to view/review as desired.
