Class Experience

For students who have completed Part 1 of Soulful Solfège (The Magical Language of Music), the mystery of the Kingdom of Solfeggio continues to reveal itself! A Dissonance has been spreading throughout the Kingdom of Solfeggio, and along with the main character, Hannah, we will awaken the music within and defeat the Dissonance together. There are no musical instruments necessary for this class, the only instrument you will need is your voice!

Hidden in the storyline of the captivating novella, The Kingdom of Solfeggio, are musical concepts to discover. We will read our way through the last 5 chapters of the novella together, and along the way discover some musical sign language and find out the meaning of Hannah's strange dream!

Each class will begin with an active listening example of a piece of vocal music. Students will create art based on these examples, and sometimes engage in interpretive dance! Mrs. H will share some interesting info about the piece, and then it is on to the kingdom of Solfeggio! After reading through a chapter of the novella together (emergent readers are encouraged to simply listen) students will create art, sing songs, and put into practice the mystery musical idea hidden within that chapter's story.

Inspired by blending the Kodály approach to music education and the Waldorf approach to literacy, the holistic methods in the Magical Language of Music classes provide students with an enjoyable experience that allows them to conceptualize musical concepts in an imaginative way.

Learning Goals

Students will learn and sing the names of the notes in the diatonic solfège scale, as well as learn the corresponding hand signs that represent these notes. In addition to solfège, students will also explore beginning musical dynamics.

Every few lessons, I will read a chapter of the accompanying novella aloud. Students are encouraged to follow along as I read, or even contribute by reading a few paragraphs aloud if desired. This class is inclusive of various reading levels, so emergent readers are more than welcome to just listen!

To reinforce some of the musical concepts, there will be 5 recommended culinary extension activities to be completed outside of class time. Yes...culinary! These activities are entirely optional, but are highly recommended to reinforce the musical ideas in a fun and unconventional way!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
The optional (but highly recommended!) culinary extension activities will require parental involvement. Please note that the recipes were carefully chosen to be easily modified for any dietary restrictions. *Everyone* should be afforded the unique opportunity to taste the notes in the major scale! Enjoy!
Supply List
Along with the Soulful Solfège curriculum program (which includes a digital copy of the curriculum guide, song recordings, recipes, additional instructional videos, and printable files) students will need the following supplies for the accompanying art projects:

* Main Lesson Book (A sketchbook works great, or loose papers that can be then bound when completed)
* Good quality crayons or other colorful drawing medium
* Digital camera (or smartphone/tablet with picture-taking capabilities
* Printer with colored ink to print photos
* Glue (either glue stick or school glue)

Also recommended (but not required) is the novella, The Kingdom of Solfeggio. A link to purchase this book is found on the website for Legends of the Staff of Musique.

Ingredients for the optional culinary extension activities will be provided in class.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching music to children and adults alike for a very long time. Somewhere along the way, many have lost the belief that everyday people are capable of beautiful music-making with each other. But music is not solely a performance art... it is a form of communication in which humans have been participating for thousands of years. Along with establishing a joyful foundation in music literacy for children, it is my hope that these classes will encourage children to share their love of music-making with each other, and even the grown-ups in their lives. Let us sing together!
