Students will learn to solve for the value of a variable using models.
Class experience
Students in this class will learn to use algebra tiles to represent one variable one step equations. They will learn to go from the model to an equation and from the equation to a model in order to solve. This strategy helps students understand what happens when to the value of an equation when isolating the variable. We will start class with notes on algebra tiles and how to use them. Basic knowledge of integers is needed for this class. Once we have taken notes we will work on a few...
This is a lesson that I have taught both in a public school with a class of 30 students and in private tutoring setting, and I have always been able to identify the misconceptions regarding this lesson. This helps me adjust the lesson to individual needs.
Students are encouraged to come prepared to class with a paper and pencil for notes. Markers or colors are recommended but not necessary.
