Please be aware that students should be able to multiply by decimals before taking this course. Students will learn to calculate the tax and tip using a proportion strategy. This is a great review for consumer mathematics. Students will be given notes on what the difference is between sales tax and tip. They will be introduced to a proportion strategy to find the tax or tip given a certain amount. Students will work on several examples as a guided practice to learn how to use the strategy. Once they are comfortable with it they will be given real world scenarios and asked to find the sales tax or tip independently. They will also be asked to find the total price. Students will leave the class with notes to use on future assignments they might have.
Learning Goals
