Required pre-requisite: Say Hello to Hindi! Intro Class 1A -this is required in order to introduce learners to Hindi vowels as well as to ensure learners will be comfortable in the class and give them a chance to ease in before committing to the longer course. You must contact the instructor prior to enrollment if your child has not taken 1A! Instruction will be provided via powerpoint imagery and explanations as well as through conversation, props, songs, and occasional youtube videos. Students will be requested to interact with each other as well as the Instructor for speaking practice and discussion. Games will be played as appropriate to material. Students will have access to the class videos after class to review. Students are required to purchase and have Meri Pratham Hindi Sulekh Varnmala by Wonder House Books prior to the start of this class. The topics covered will be as follows: Week 1-2: Review and practice of Vowels and corresponding vocabulary from the Intro Class (food, animals) and conversational phrases learned in the Intro Class (greetings, introducing oneself, what is this); Introducing 'How are you?' and related feelings. Weeks 3-11: Weekly class introductions of one pair of Hindi consonants, their sounds and how to write them. Corresponding everyday vocabulary (will include but not exclusively food, household and school objects and animals) will be taught alongside to illustrate the sounds. Songs will be used to help students retain and enjoy the Hindi alphabet. Colors and numbers (1-10, possibly 1-20 depending on learner progress) will also be introduced and used through conversation, practical activities, and songs. Basic phrases (who are you, how are you, what is that, that is/this is...), word plurality and gender, as well as politeness levels will be instructed and illustrated through imagery and practiced through song, practical activities, and speaking activities such as show and tell. Week 12: Review of topics The goal of this course is to make Hindi relatable and fun without sacrificing the essential language and cultural elements. Further it is is to ensure learners are proficient and confident in the topics. Other topics could be introduced depending on learner progress. As a note, not all Hindi consonants will be introduced in this class. Further consonants will be introduced in the 2A class.
Learning Goals
Students will start to be able to express themselves in basic phrases and identify a variety of basic objects. They will be able to start recognizing a section of the consonants and write them as well.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I began studying Hindi in 2007 with a private tutor and continued to study Hindi at Indiana University as part of my India Studies degree. I have spent approximately 10 months in India at various times and places living with locals and honing my language skills. I tutored Hindi in 2019 and have been teaching Hindi at the TN Language Center since January 2020. In addition, I am a Kathak dance student and have been learning Kathak at Upasana Performing Arts Center, Nashville, TN over the past 11 years. I have also been a part of my dance school’s South Asian community since I began dancing Kathak and therefore have been able to gain additional cultural and historical comprehension as regards both Hindi/Urdu and South Asia.
I have worked in Montessori classrooms as well as more traditional classrooms working with young children as well as teens. I bring my TEFL training as well as my experience teaching English as a foreign language to all my language classes. Additionally, having been a foreign language student myself I know the challenges that many learners face in acquiring a new language and seek to make new concepts-grammar, vocab, phonics-as accessible and as comprehensible as possible through various means-media, powerpoint, activities, drills-by whatever means possible! I love learning new things everyday and hope that my classes would pass along not only knowledge but the attitude that knowledge and learning are valuable and exciting!
