Class Experience

Are you a strong reader? The SAT reading comprehension portion asks you to read a text and show you understand the argument. You'll also need to demonstrate that you are able to make connections to the concepts presented between different passages. Understanding how this part of the test works and the best way to approach it can help you succeed and feel more confident. This class will review the most common SAT reading questions you’re likely to see, as well as tons of excellent strategies and tips to help you get the highest score possible on this section of the exam.

We will start with a review of the strategies for this portion of the exam, followed by guided practice using questions straight from recent exams. Every class uses a mix of new practice problems randomly chosen from past tests, so you can drop in anytime for a fresh review. 

Week of 4/10: Science passages
Week of 4/17: Paired passages
Week of 4/24: History and social science passages
Week of 5/1: Literary narrative passages

Why, hello! Welcome to my classroom. Let me introduce myself. I am Melissa, teacher extraordinaire. With more than 17 years of teaching under my belt, you'll be sure to get the best and easiest methods for learning whatever it is you've come for! 

My teaching background began with SAT/ACT/SSAT test prep 17 years ago, but it soon expanded to many subjects where I found myself teaching students around the world from elementary to post-university level. Nearly two decades of tutoring has allowed me to become a highly-skilled teacher in math, writing, test prep, and more. I have taught countless students (literally thousands!) primarily in math, English, government, political science, business, and ESL, with students from elementary to university level both in-person and online. 

I hold a B.A. in politics and M.A. in comparative politics, both of which have extensive qualitative and quantitative work. I also acted as a research assistant during my Master's program. Since then, I've been teaching online so I can travel, but mostly now as an excellent way to connect with students during the pandemic. 

Having lived in several countries, I love traveling and learning new things. Painting and music are also huge interests of mine. 

As for my teaching style, it's all about making the student get engaged and have that "aha!" moment. I work hard to engage my students, and I love it when they get excited about learning! 

Don't understand something? Don't worry. I can explain it 20 different ways until we find the one that works best for your learning style. Plus, I know a ton of easy tips and tricks to take the headache out of studying. The easiest way is often the best way, right?
