Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Writing in college is a whole different ball game. Writing becomes the main focus, and professors expect you to be ready to handle it. If you want to get ready for college-level writing, this is the place for you! Each class, we will analyze texts, compare and contrast ideas and concepts, and review how to apply important elements like proper citations and grammar to all of our writing.

What we will do: Each class will start with reading a short article and an analysis. This class is aimed to teach students *how* to write a critical response. Most college writing assignments ask students to read and then respond by critically analyzing the work. Students are asked to demonstrate that they understand the author's argument, can explain it in their own words, and respond with strengths, weaknesses, and whether they agree with the author. We also address potential opposing viewpoints and evaluate their strengths. For time, much of our work in this class is discussed rather than written to help students understand how to approach analytical writing and apply critical thinking skills. After class, students may choose to complete their writing response by applying our class lesson and discussion to their work and send it to the teacher for feedback.

My background: My Master's degree and 20 years of writing tutoring for high school and college students means I know exactly what college professors are looking for as you prepare to enter university. I have taught hundreds of high school students in person and online in writing as they prepare for college. I also have extensive experience as a college writing tutor, meaning I can see how many students enter college without the skills they need to succeed. Having been a teaching assistant at the university level, I can tell you that your college life will be much easier if you prepare to meet college-level writing standards now. With industry experience as an editor and proofreader for publications in print and online, I can help you not only sharpen your grammar skills, but also understand how to analyze a text.

Students can join in anytime without needing to join every week, as we will do new assignments each class that do not build off of the previous class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
In this class, we may discuss controversial topics and read articles about issues that students may or may not have strong opinions on, and class discussion will address the strengths, weaknesses, and opposing viewpoints at all times in order to provide a fair and balanced perspective. We spend a lot of time in the "grey area" of issues in order to look at all the sides.
