Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner Level
In this 7 week course, learners will explore the beliefs and traditions of Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism and Humanism. This course explores religions with curiosity, respect and understanding.

This class is best suited for learners who know very little about world religions. Each lesson offers a quick overview of each religion, focusing on the similarities between each and how they impact the day-to-day life of its followers.

Each lesson will explore a religion, and may contain short videos of children talking about their cultures and beliefs, as well as the history and traditions of people of that faith. All religious beliefs are treated as equally valid, and the similarities between them are highlighted. Learners must be willing and able to demonstrate curiosity and respect to others.

Along with all of the religions explored, humanist and atheist beliefs are also explored and respected.

Lessons are teacher-led, as we read information, watch video clips and answer and ask questions together.

I am an experienced UK classroom teacher, who gained their teaching qualification in 2007. In the UK, all state schools must teach religious education. This means that I am qualified and have years of experience of teaching children about the variety of world religions. Every Religious Education lesson I have taught, has allowed all students to develop their understanding of the different beliefs and traditions that people around the world may have.

📎This class will not be canceled for low-enrollment. I teach all classes, even if only 1 learner is enrolled. If your learner does not like to go ahead with 1-to-1 classes, please let me know.📎

I'm Ms. Riot, a creative teacher (certified, qualified and experienced) from London, England. My teaching adventure began at university with the completion of my 4-year degree (Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Primary Education) back in 2007.

In the UK, we achieve our QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) through additional exams and proven experience which I also achieved in 2007. All UK primary (elementary) schools must provide Religious Education, and therefore our teaching qualification includes and expects the delivery of a secular religious curriculum. This means that I have many years of classroom experience delivering this style of lesson. Schools in Britain are also required to promote the basic 'British values' of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for different faiths and beliefs. Schools are held accountable for developing tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation for and respect for their own and other cultures and religions.

As an elementary classroom teacher, I developed creative classrooms where students felt safe enough to fail. My passion for reading also allowed me to develop a new career as a high school librarian, teaching reading lessons across the school. I have also taught students English up to the age of 16 at a prestigious online school.

More recently, I have worked within the learning department in a large museum, teaching at a range of online schools and designing curriculum for education resource companies. I also deliver lectures to trainee teachers.

At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a belief that learning should be an adventure, sprinkled with curiosity and laughter. We can be serious about learning without it always being too serious.
