In this 10 week history lesson, learners will explore the theme of Crime and Punishment through time.

This class is great for learners who are less confident with history, and/or reading. The content is delivered in an easy-to access style. The reading level required is around grade 5-7.

They will begin by exploring what is meant by crime and punishment, and then each lesson will build chronologically upon the previous. We will first learn what crime and punishment was like in Roman Britain, before moving through the Anglo-Saxon period, the Tudors, the Stuarts, Georgian Britain and Victorian Britain. We will end the unit by considering how the police force in the UK developed in the 20th century, and by comparing what crime and punishment is like today compared to the past. We will end with an online escape room, to revise everything we have learned.

Throughout the lessons, learners will learn to consider historical sources and understand how they can be interpreted.

The lessons are delivered with direct but informal instruction. There will plenty of opportunity for questions and wonder. Learners can use their mics or the chat box.

They may be able to note connections and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms, such as: crime, period, chronology, deter, severe, court, tithing, wergild, ordeal, jury, treason, abolish, custody, incriminate, pact, jailer, oakum, industrial, promotion, unarmed, detective, prevention, detection, rehabilitation.

I'm Ms. Riot, a creative teacher (certified, qualified and experienced) from London, England. My teaching adventure began at university with the completion of my 4-year degree (Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Primary Education) back in 2007.

In the UK, we achieve our QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) through additional exams and proven experience which I also achieved in 2007.

As an elementary classroom teacher in the UK, I am qualified and experienced in teaching history to students of this age. History is in our National Curriculum, which is the legal document that all public schools must deliver curriculum to support. The National Curriculum states that when teaching history: "Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time."

More recently, I have worked within the learning department in a large museum, teaching at a range of online schools and designing curriculum for education resource companies. I also deliver lectures to trainee teachers.

At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a belief that learning should be an adventure, sprinkled with curiosity and laughter. We can be serious about learning without it always being too serious.
