Class Experience

Students should be beginning readers who can read basic words such as bed, frog, cat, make, and rope. We will read words that use short vowel sounds (CVC), blends (CCVC), and long vowels with a silent e (CVCe) as we learn each digraph. We will also use some sight words as examples, although it is not required to know specific sight words before the course. This course works well after my Begininng Blends CCVC course and my Magic E Long Vowels CVCe course. If the student cannot read the example words yet I recommend one of my other courses.

Lesson 1: We will learn what a digraph is. We will learn to recognize the sound of the digraph SH and practice reading words with this digraph, including ship and share.

Lesson 2: We will review SH digraphs, and learn to recognize the sound of the digraphs CH and TCH. We will practice reading words with these digraphs, such as champ, chin, patch, and itch. We will briefly discuss when a word uses CH vs. TCH.

Lesson 3: We will review the SH, CH, and TCH digraphs. We will play a game to practice reading words with these digraphs. We will focus on the difference in sound between SH and CH/TCH.

Lesson 4: We will learn to read words with both the hard and soft TH. This includes words with the target digraph at the beginning and the end of the word, such as that, this, them, path, and moth.

Lesson 5: We will play a game to practice the digraphs we have learned so far. We will focus on the difference between the SH and CH sounds. We will also focus on the difference between the hard and soft TH sounds.

Lesson 6: We will learn to read words with the digraph PH and practice reading, such as graph and phone.

Lesson 7: We will learn to read words with the digraph WH and practice reading words like white and whale.

Lesson 8: We will play a game to review all of the digraphs we have learned and to practice reading words that use these digraphs.

Hello! I am so excited to teach your child. I teach preschool and early elementary reading classes, and flexible schedule cooking classes. I have a degree in Elementary Education from Utah State University. I taught in Elementary Schools for 4 years before choosing to stay home with my daughters, where I spend a lot of time cooking and baking. I also spent a few months in Brazil where I taught English classes to children and adults. I love making learning fun! I look forward to seeing your child in my Outschool classroom!
