Students will learn to recognize a letter each day in both upper case and lower case. They will see the letter written both as a lowercase and as an uppercase/capital letter. They will learn to recognize the sound that the letter of the day makes. We will focus on the sound and on finding words that use the letter and sound of the day. Students will be encouraged to think of words with the target sound and share with the class. Each day students will be encouraged to find words that begin with the letter of the day and bring them to class next time. Each class will begin with students sharing any words or objects they found that begin with the letter of the day from the previous class, and then we will learn the new letter. We will begin by showing the letter in both lowercase and uppercase, then we will sing the alphabet until we get to the letter of the day. This helps the students to practice listening to each letter's name individually. We will then discuss words that begin with the letter of the day, focusing on the target sound. Students will repeat the target sound many times throughout the lesson. At the end, students will also practice tracing the letter with a finger in the air. This class does not require any prerequisite knowledge of the alphabet or specific letter sounds.
