Reading interest, fluency and confidence can sometimes be improved by reading aloud in a relaxed environment. This class will encourage students to read. I will bring my stuffed animal; sometimes Fluffy the Dog or Priya my Owl to match the developmental age. Students are encouraged to have their favorite action figure, doll, stuffed animal or any other comforting item nearby to accompany them as they read. During our time together students will be timed at 3-5 minute intervals to read without interruption. After this time, I will ask story related questions that I will gather while listening to them read. Students will apply the reading and writing connection by writing one complete sentence to match their reading comprehension answer. We will repeat this process for the duration of the class and students will be given 1 minute to draw a picture or to read aloud all they have written on paper. Please come prepared with a book to read. I can also screen share a topic from the weekly outline below if needed. Thank you. The purpose of this class is to build reading comprehension, phonics and writing skills. The reading writing connection is vital because it helps students to read their own words for improved fluency and confidence. This is a class to help build reading confidence in an encouraging and fun environment. Please message with any questions. I look forward to meeting you! I grew up and went to school in the New York City area but now live in a small farming community in rural Midwest, USA. I enjoy working with and meeting people from both urban and rural settings and readily adjust to meet their learning needs in a culturally responsive way. I also volunteer at a prison and remain adaptable to ensure a supportive and safe learning environment.
I have degrees in the area of Corporate Communication, Education, and Second Language Acquisition. My teaching background is varied as a former 3rd Grade Classroom Teacher at a French immersion school, Orton-Gillingham trained structured reading teacher and as an Adjunct College Instructor.
I believe instructional data is crucial to improve learning outcomes. I constantly assess student comprehension during sessions in a relaxed and encouraging learning environment.
I love traveling and learning more about different cultures. This helps me to support all learners in my classroom. So far, I have visited Estonia, Russia, Kinshasa (Congo), London, Togo, South Korea, Latvia and a few other places. I also studied abroad in France. With each travel experience my respect for people and their culture simply deepens. I look forward to meeting you too!
