Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 12
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This class is a 1:1 tutoring session geared to improve writing skills by helping learners apply strategies. 

For writing structure 
We focus on word parts, punctuation and conventions and use picture clues/illustrations as a guide to write more.

For writing clarity
We focus on word choice/nuances, spelling patterns and grammar points (tenses, conjunctions, etc).

For creative writing
We focus on writing elements and use descriptive words to explain the character, setting, plot, etc. 

For paragraph writing
We focus on the purpose, audience and tone as well as the meaning of a topic sentence. 

For essay writing
We focus on thesis statements, claims, background information, central points/ideas and supporting details. 

Enrichment 
We focus on research methodology, plagiarism,  bias, citation principles. 

These topics are not complete but is given to provide a general idea of the type of academic needs that have been addressed during these tutoring sessions. Students are always expected to please arrive on time with something to write with. Thank you for messaging beforehand if you would like to share anything specific about your child. Otherwise I will introduce a topic that I observe as an area of need. Here are just some of the topics frequently requested.

In this tutoring session learners receive teacher support through presentations, examples, guidance with sentence starters and emphasis why to use key paragraph words. For each paragraph type there is specific academic vocabulary to guide the writing. Students will be taught some of these key words and will be required to use the vocabulary to structure their paragraph. 

Learners will also be prompted to make spelling/grammar edits and will receive help through the Zoom chat box and whiteboard features. 

Students are encouraged to bring any work for this 1:1 tutoring session. Otherwise I will present teacher-created materials to teach one of the paragraph topics listed here for instruction and practice.
