Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
In this 1 on 1 course, students will develop phonological awareness and phonics skills that are critical in building strong readers. Students who have difficulty learning to read often have difficulty with Auditory Processing (hearing and manipulating sounds) so they benefit from explicit instruction in phonological awareness and phonics rules. At the beginning of the first lesson, students will be informally assessed through oral word games to determine a baseline of skills. This course is designed to provide young learners with the foundational phonological awareness and phonics skills needed to grow as readers. Students will learn and practice skills such as blending, segmenting, and isolating sounds in words through movement and games. Students will have the opportunity to build on the skills they mastered in the previous lesson.

Other Details

Supply List
Students will need 5 small objects to manipulate when we are segmenting and substituting sounds in a word. This could be anything your child has that is engaging but not too distracting. I often use 5 legos that are different colors, mini squishable figures, or crayons.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
In class, we will use google slides, seesaw, and Kahoot.

Master's Degree in Special Education from Texas Tech University
As a an Educational Diagnostician, I am well versed in the area of phonological and phonemic awareness and the impact on reading outcomes for all students. While I am not a certified Dyslexia Therapist, I am trained in evaluating for the disability and knowledgeable on interventions needed to support students- one of which is direct instruction in phonics. I have spent the majority of my career teaching students with a learning disability how to read.
