Class Experience

This is a Flex Course to learn how to read in French for beginners. This course is designed to develop a great phonological awareness in French. Students will learn the alphabet, the letters, the initial sounds, the complex sounds and the exception rules of complex sounds. Each week the students will be asked to watch prerecorded videos to learn and practice sounds with me. There will be activities to complete in order to put into practice the weekly content with answer key. This is the self learning version, therefore there won't be any individual reading assessment and individual feedback from the teacher. This class is taught in English !

Please note that it is important to complete the activities and to review the sounds through my videos to grasp all the essentials notion to be able to develop a great phonological awareness by the end of this course. Some student might needed parental assistance during the course.

What will include the flex course formula ?

There will be several videos of me teaching the pronunciation of all the sounds mentioned in the list below to help student practice their basic and complex sounds (links will be shared in the forum biweekly). I will also provide a video for the instructions for each fun activity to complete during the semester. This is a flexible schedule course with zero live meetings. However, I will be available to answer all questions through the classroom and by email weekly.

How will I share my content and give activities instructions for student ?

Weekly reading assessment content (sounds to practice, instructions and material (PDF) will be share in the classroom forum. Plus, a video recording of me explaining how to complete each activity to practice the learned sounds of the week will be shared in the classroom forum as well.

How will I evaluate my students reading improvement ?

Each 2 weeks, each student will have to complete a reading challenge assessment and share it with me (by video or audio recording). Once I have received my students biweekly reading assessment within the time delay mentioned in the forum, I will send relevant feedback and phonics tips into the learner's message box. Please note that if the assessment wasn't due on time, I won't send feedback. Students will have 6 days to complete their assessment right after it will be posted in the forum. Please note that I don't support a graded feedback system. Therefore, each student will receive comments, tips and suggestions for each reading assessment. Plus, at the end of the semester, each student will have a final reading assessment to complete (all sounds learned included) to share with their classmates (optional) in the forum or directly into my teacher's message box.

As for the weekly reading activity practice, the answer key will be shared in the forum with the PDF and a video recording of me explaining the instruction in order to complete the activity with success.

Participation from all learners will be expected as video viewing (sounds practice) and activities into the classroom.

How will the students interact with each other ?
Student will be asked to participate to my biweekly reading challenge (few words or short sentences) in the classroom forum (optional). Student will be free to comment and leave constructive opinion about their pairs reading assessment. Plus, there will be an alphabet song contest at the beginning of the semester. Student will be asked to participate (video or audio recording) in the classroom forum.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach French as a second or third language to elementary private school immigrant students here in Quebec, Montreal. Most of my students need to learn how to read and how to write in a short notice to quickly adapt to their new academic environment. Therefore, I have developed a simple and efficient way to learn how to read in French. My method is not only efficient but also fun for kids. I have designed all the educational material for this program including teaching methods that I am currently sharing with other educators here in Quebec province. Learning how to read in a language is opening the door of multiple opportunities to discover new knowledge. I am very happy to contribute to this opportunity.
