Class Experience

This class offers a simulated reading test designed to prepare Grade 6 students for the Quebec Ministry nonfiction reading exam. Students will engage in a hands-on, interactive session where they will practice key exam strategies while building confidence.

What will be taught?

 1. How to approach a nonfiction text effectively and extract key information.

 2. Strategies for answering questions that target the four dimensions of reading:

     Comprehension: Identifying explicit information.

     Interpretation: Making inferences from the text.

     Critical Judgment: Evaluating the logic and credibility of the text.

     Appreciation: Forming and expressing personal opinions based on textual evidence.

     Practical tips and strategies to apply on exam day.


What topics will you cover?

Analyzing nonfiction texts, including identifying main ideas, supporting details, and textual structure.

Tackling exam-style questions across the four dimensions.

Learning how to justify answers using evidence from the text.

Building confidence and speed in answering questions.



How is your class structured?

Before class:

Students will receive a nonfiction text (PDF) to read before the session.

During class (1. hour):

Introduction (5 minutes): Overview of the text and key expectations for the exercise.

Interactive Q&A (+- 40 minutes): Students will respond to 11 exam-style questions related to the text, one dimension at a time.

Answer Explanation (+-30 minutes): I will review the questions, explaining answers with the aid of the answer key and excerpts from the text.


Throughout the class, I will provide strategies and tips to help students improve their reading skills and exam performance.

I will guide students step-by-step through the test, encouraging participation and discussion.

I will use slides to display questions, highlight key excerpts from the text, and share strategies for approaching each question type.

Students will have the opportunity to respond verbally or in the chat, fostering active engagement.

Pre-Requisites
Learners should have completed the Quebec primary school curriculum or an equivalent homeschooling program before enrolling. This simulation is designed for students familiar with the structure and requirements of Grade 6 Quebec.
Supply List
Learners will need the following materials for this class:

Basic supplies:

 - A notebook or paper for note-taking.
 - Pencils, pens, and highlighters for annotating the text.

Provided materials:

A nonfiction text (PDF) will be sent to learners before the class.

The practice test with an answer key for independent review after the session.
No additional books or supplies need to be purchased. All resources are included in the course fee.
