Raggedy Ann's Pet Show and Tell : Sharing and Writing About Pets

Miss Ellen
Average rating:4.9Number of reviews:(166)
Students will share their pets and Miss Ellen will share her dog, Kenji. Students will write about their pets and share their writing with the class.

Class experience

Students will write sentences with a complete thought, and use the correct conventions of writing with uppercase letters to begin and periods to end the sentences. The prompt will be writing about your pet. Students may come to class with an idea to write about, or I can give them a writing prompt. (Tell about a recent vet visit, what tricks can your pet do, what fun things happened with you and your pet this week, what's your pet's favorite toy, favorite food, how did you pick your pet's name, how did you get your pet, ...) Beginning writers may write one sentence which can be a caption for their picture. More experienced students may write a story with an opening, details and closing. Students may illustrate their stories, and the stories and pictures can be shared at the end of class.
I'm an elementary school teacher and spent most of my career as a homeroom teacher in first and second grade. I also worked as a reading teacher instructing in small groups for grades K-3. Students need to develop their writing skills. They need to practice writing a sentence with a complete thought and use uppercase letters and punctuation correctly. As students develop their writing, they grow from writing one sentence to writing an opening sentence, details and a closing. This class is meant to guide that learning while engaging the student to write about their pet. Students will vary in ability and their writing will reflect where they are in their writing development.
Their pet, writing paper (either lined or unlined), drawing paper, pencil and eraser, their choice of crayons, markers or colored pencils.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
