Class Experience
**This class is scheduled by request, so please send me a message with your available times, and we'll get started! Thanks!** Welcome to my online, private and individualized, piano lessons! My name is Ms. Katie and I'm looking forward to walking through this journey with you! For our first class, we'll get to meet each other, talk about your music background, and discuss any specific music goals you may have. During this time, I'll gauge which book in the Alfred series would be the best fit...
The goal of this class is to progress your learner's understanding of music and their ability to play and perform on the piano.
Hello Outschool Friends! You're probably here because you love music and you're excited to learn more about playing the piano. Friends, you've come to the right place! My name is Ms. Katie and I've been teaching music for over 20 years - welcome to my online studio! I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education with emphasis on classical techniques. In my studio, we'll focus on music theory, proper techniques, relaxation, musical interpretation, communication, scales, and cadences. Let's set up a lesson time and start practicing together! ~Ms. Katie
Homework for this class will vary greatly depending on your learner's age and ability, as well as on the frequency of lessons. Young beginning learners with lessons once a week may only need 10-15 per day at first. Advanced students may require up to an hour of practice per day. We can discuss your learning goals and expectations for your learner and decide on an at-home practice plan.
~ Learners will need a full-sized (88-key) acoustic piano or electric keyboard with weighted keys. If the learner is using an acoustic piano, it needs to be maintained to reasonable standards such as proper tuning and functioning keys and pedals. ~ A pencil with eraser is always handy! ~ After the first lesson, learners will be guided to which piano lesson books to purchase. ~ Periodically, learners will be assigned special pieces that they'll need to print out.
40 minutes per class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
~ Young learners may benefit from a parent sitting close by, off screen, to assist with focus. ~ Please note that allowing your learner to eat during class will greatly restrict their ability to focus on the lesson and be engaged with the teacher. Please prohibit your learner from eating during class.
~ Learners will be using the Alfred piano series with occasional pieces from the Wendy Stevens library. ~ Alfred has several series that are specific to the age of the learner. These include "Alfred's Basic Prep Course for the Younger Beginner," "Alfred's Basic Piano Library," and "Alfred's Basic Piano Library for the Later Beginner." Some of these are an "All-In-One" book that contain lesson and theory together. Others have them as separate books. ~ In addition, Alfred offers options such as "Technique," "Notespeller," and "Recital" piano books that offer a little fun and variation to your learner's practice time. ~ A scales/arpeggios/cadences book may also be required.
