***THIS CLASS IS FOR OLDER LEARNERS (10-12 YEARS OLD) who want more practice with the foundational spelling concepts listed below.*** Improve your child's spelling and reading skills with this class! I'm here to support you! During this class, learners will have engaging, explicit, multi-sensory instruction based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. It was developed for children with dyslexia or dysgraphia but would benefit any child. We will take a deeper dive into seven phonics concepts (short vowels, digraphs, consonant blends, magic 'e', vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, diphthongs) spending one to four weeks practicing each concept. I will use various props (magic wand for "magic e" 🪄, sports balls for vowel teams ⚽, etc.). 1-3 worksheets will be attached to my classroom posts for optional additional practice. Learners will: ⭐Trace sounds with their fingers kinesthetically on an object of their choice (see supply list). ⭐Touch spell, write words and write a sentence. I will offer a variety of sizes of words (short, medium, long) for them to choose from. ⭐Read isolated words and a short text. The Orton-Gillingham approach was developed for children with dyslexia or dysgraphia. If your child has been diagnosed with either of those this class is for you. A systematic approach to teaching phonics is perfect for any child who needs some extra support in that area. Dr. Samuel Orton said, "Analyze the language to be learned into its smallest useful elements-the sounds we hear and speak and the graphic symbols we use when we read and write. This reduces to a minimum the necessary memory load, a major problem for those who find language learning difficult. " **Prerequisite - learner must know at least 20 letter sounds** 💥The following concepts will be covered.💥 Week of 2/24 - Blends Week of 3/3 - Blends Week of 3/10 - Blends *NO CLASS ON 3/17 & 3/18* Week of 3/17 - Magic 'e' Week of 3/24 - Magic 'e' Week of 3/31 - Magic 'e' Week of 4/7 - Vowel Teams (ea, ee) Week of 4/14 - Vowel Teams (oa, oe) *NO CLASS ON 4/23 & 4/24* Week of 4/21 - Vowel Teams (ai, ay) Week of 4/28 - Vowel Teams (all) Week of 5/5 - R-Controlled Vowels (er, ir, ur) Week of 5/12 - R-Controlled Vowels (ar, or) Week of 5/19 - R-Controlled Vowels (all) *NO CLASS ON 5/26 & 5/27* Week of 5/28 - Diphthongs (ow, ou) ****CONDENSED SUMMER SCHEDULE**** Week of 6/2 - Short Vowels Week of 6/9 - Digraphs Week of 6/16 - Blends Week of 6/23 - Blends *NO CLASS WEEK OF 6/30* Week of 7/7 - Magic 'e' Week of 7/14 - Magic 'e' Week of 7/21 - Vowel Teams Week of 7/28 - Vowel Teams Week of 8/4 - Vowel Teams Week of 8/11 - R-Controlled Vowels Week of 8/18 - R-Controlled Vowels Week of 8/25 - Diphthongs (ow, ou) *NO CLASS WEEK OF 9/1* Week of 9/8 - Short Vowels Week of 9/15 - Short Vowels Week of 9/22 - Digraphs Week of 9/29 - Digraphs Week of 10/6 - Blends Week of 10/13 - Blends *NO CLASS WEEK OF 10/20* Week of 10/27 - Blends Week of 11/3 - Magic 'e' Week of 11/10 - Magic 'e' Week of 11/17 - Magic 'e' *NO CLASS ON 11/26 & 11/27* Week of 11/24 - Vowel Teams Week of 12/1 - Vowel Teams Week of 12/8 - Vowel Teams Week of 12/15 - Vowel Teams *NO CLASS ON 12/24 & 12/25* Week of 12/22 - R-Controlled Vowels *NO CLASS ON 12/31 & 1/1* Week of 12/29 - R-Controlled Vowels Week of 1/5 - R-Controlled Vowels Week of 1/12 - Diphthongs (ow, ou)
