Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
Most people have learned that S says /s/, but what about words like “is” and “beds?” I teach all the sounds made by the alphabet as opposed to teaching just the one or two most commons sounds. Additionally, I teach them in the order they occur most often.

By learning the 75 basic phonograms that represent the 45 English sounds, along with spelling rules, we can decode 98% of English words. There is no falling back on exceptions and no memorizing sight words.

This ongoing, one-on-one tutoring course is for learners beginning their reading journey or looking for more support. Learners will work on developing phonemic awareness skills through investigative lessons that include multi-sensory activities and music. The goal of this course is for students to be able to recall all letter sounds, decode multisyllabic words, build short phrases, and spell one-syllable words.

Depending on learners needs, we will cover:
•	Kinesthetic awareness of sounds
•	Distinguishing and identifying sounds
•	Blending two words into a compound word
•	Blending words with two phonemes
•	Blending one-syllable words with and without out a consonant blend
•	Blending two consonants
•	Segmenting one-syllable words
•	Initial, final, and medial sounds
•	Blending and segmenting multisyllabic words
•	Handwriting
•	Spelling analysis

Once learners know all letter sounds, they are ready to graduate to our next course, “One-on-one Learn to Read Series: Multi-Letter Phonograms.”

Each lesson will follow a similar structure.
•	Greeting
•	Phonemic awareness practice
•	Introduction to new letter sounds
•	Letter sounds song
•	Handwriting
•	Phonogram review game
•	Spelling analysis
•	Comprehension and fluency
•	Wrap-up and farewell
