One-On-One Learn to Read Series: Phonemic Awareness
Based on the Science of Reading, this ongoing course will teach learners the phonemic awareness needed to read. Learners will enjoy investigative lessons that include multi-sensory activities and music.

Most people have learned that S says /s/, but what about words like “is” and “beds?” I teach all the sounds made by the alphabet as opposed to teaching just the one or two most commons sounds. Additionally, I teach them in the order they occur most often. By learning the 75 basic phonograms that represent the 45 English sounds, along with spelling rules, we can decode 98% of English words. Students will be able to recall all letter sounds, decode multisyllabic words, build short phrases, and spell one-syllable words.
I have a Master of Art in Education and hold a current teaching license for grades K-6 in Virginia. I am a former elementary school teacher. In addition to teaching on OutSchool, I am a homeschool mom to a 7 year old and I provide in-person tutoring. I have taught children how to learn to read as well as to read to learn.
