Do you struggle with reading in science and history class? Do you find it difficult to sequence events or write a summary? Is reading easy, but learning from the reading a challenge? Let me help you improve your informational reading skills for social studies and science class. Using a Google Slide visual presentation of a weekly article, students will be taught text features and structures that are commonly found in informational reading. Each class includes grammar and vocabulary lessons that will help students to be successful in reading the article. Grammar provides information to increase prefix, root, and suffix identification that is useful for decoding new words. Vocabulary is often content specific-often words or words that are confusing without context and background knowledge. Vocabulary can also be unique to a field of study and students may have had limited exposure to the word before the lesson. Students will practice reading strategies that allow them to identify key terms, the main idea, summarize passages, and find evidence to support claims and statements. Students do not need to have prior science or history knowledge to be successful in this course. Please reach out to me for a day and time that works best for your learner. New topics on each Tuesday: Past topics: Loss of Indigenous Languages, 5-Second Rule, US Neutrality Laws, Bonfire Night in the UK, Science of Flight November: Science Revolution, Click Chemistry, Sliced Bread Banned (WWII), Vibranium, a metal I will teach this class to one student if there was a cancellation or an absent student, although the class time may be shortened based on the individual student. If students are enrolled, they may ask for a class recording to review the lesson on their own. There will not be a class taught if there are no students present.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to use content specific vocabulary accurately in context.
Students will be able to determine the six text structures for non-fiction writing.
Students will be able to determine the main idea and supporting details.

I have been a state licensed and highly-qualified teacher for over 15 years. I was named my school's district reading and writing teacher on two occasions. I have always seen myself as a reading teacher for all of my students. Students who are in grades 3 and above read to learn and need to learn reading skills and strategies to be successful as they continue their education.
