Class Experience

US Grade 4
This unit’s focus is on division up to 4 digit numbers. Lessons will be displayed using powerpoint or google slides. Students should be able to divide up to 3 digit numbers before taking this class. Students should also have an understanding of multiplication as our warm ups will include this. Students are encouraged to use manipulatives throughout the unit. I will include a paper copy of manipulatives. Please take a look at the following description below to see if this class is a good fit for your learner.

Each lesson will have the same format:
Warm up: we will do a math warm up to help turn on our minds to get ready for the lesson. A math question(s) will be displayed on a google slide. Students can record their thinking on a worksheet. Students are encouraged to share their thinking with the class. Our warm ups are focused on Multiplication and Division.
Lesson: I will teach a lesson to the class. We will work together using anchor charts, manipulatives and powerpoint presentations. Students will “Watch Me First”, explaining a concept and work through a problem. Then through guided practice, students will work through the material with me. Students will be provided with a worksheet to record their thinking as we engage in the lesson. I will be using digital or paper manipulatives.
Independent work: Students will work on assigned work with support from me. Students will be provided with a worksheet. We will go over the work together. Students are encouraged to share their thinking with the class.
Game to support division. Games will start off with division by 1 digit numbers up to 4 digit numbers to practice fact fluency.
Reflection: Students will reflect on their thinking and how they feel about the math topic.
Extension: Students will be provided with an extension activity that he or she can complete on their own time. Extension activities are a support for learning outside of class time. These activities are not corrected in class.

Lesson 1 - Introduction to Remainders
Objective: Learners will investigate dividing numbers that result in a remainder. For example: draw a model to represent the equation 15 / 2, determine a multiplication fact to help solve an equation as in 35 / 6.
Manipulatives: Counters or base 10 blocks
Game: Division Memory - Practice 1 and 2 Digit Division for fact fluency practice.

Lesson 2 - Interpret Remainders
Objective: Learners will explain the meaning of remainders when solving word problems. For example: Jack has 37 stickers, he wants to put his stickers in groups of 5. After he has put the stickers into 5 groups, how many stickers does he have left over?
Manipulatives: Counters or base 10 blocks
Game: Division Tic Tac Toe - Practice 1 and 2 Digit Division for fact fluency practice.
Lesson 3 - Dividing by multiples of of 10, 100 & 1,000
Objective: Learners will practice dividing multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000. For example: 5 / 250 = ? or 6 / 1,800 = ? into parts to help solve the equation.
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks
Game: Space Race Division - Practice 1 and 2 Digit Division for fact fluency practice.

Lesson 4 - Estimating Quotients
Objective: learners will use estimation to help find the answer of an equation. For example: estimating the math equation 156 / 3 to 150 / 3.
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks
Game: Cover Up - 2 to 3 Digit Division - Please have 2 dice on hand

Lesson 5 - Division And Area Models
Objective: Learners will create area models to support
dividing multi-digit numbers without remainders. For example: drawing an area model to help solve the equation 726 / 6.
Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks
Game: Roll and Cover - 2 to 3 Digit Division - Please have 1 dice on hand

Lesson 6 - Division And Area Models Continued
Objective: Learners will create area models to support dividing multi-digit numbers with remainders. For example: drawing an area model to help solve the equation 4,592 / 3.
Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks
Game: Spin and Divide- 2 to 3 Digit Division

Lesson 7 - Division with Partial Quotients
Objective: Learners will investigate using partial quotients to help divide two numbers with no remainder. For example: solving the equation 936 / 2 by breaking it into easier parts - subtracting 800 from 936.
Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks
Game: House Drawing Activity - students will answer division questions up to 3 digits and draw a house based on the answer to the questions. Please have a pencil, something to colour with and a piece of paper on hand.

Lesson 8 - Division with Partial Quotients Continued
Objective: Learners will investigate using partial quotients to help divide two numbers with no remainder. For example: solving the equation 6,283 / 2 by breaking it into easier parts - subtracting 5,000 from 6,283.
Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks
Game: 4 In A Row / Make A Word

Lesson 9 - Division with Partial Quotients Continued
Objective: Learners will practice solving equations using partial quotients to divide. For example: students will play a math game to solve several equations of 4 digits divided by 1.
Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks
Game: Cover A Quotient - Please have two dice on hand
Lesson 10 - Multiplication Comparison
Objective: Learners will practice using both multiplication and division to solve several word problems. For example: Jack and Kate raise funds for the local animal shelter. Jack fundraised $125 in total. Kate fundraised 4 times more than Jack. How much more funds did Kate raise for the animal shelter?
Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks, Tape Diagrams
Game: Roll and Color - Please have 1 dice.

Lesson 11 - Multiplication or Division
Objective: Learners will practice using both multiplication or division to solve several word problems. For example: Using prior knowledge, decide on a strategy, answer the problem, re-check answer to solve multiple digit word problems.
Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks
Game: Division Dice Game - Please have 1 dice

Lesson 12 - Word Problems With Multiple Steps
Objective: Learners will practice using both multiplication or division to solve several word problems with multiple steps. For example: Using prior knowledge, decide on a strategy, answer the problem, re-check answer to solve multiple digit word problems.
Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks
Game: Know or Go Student Vs Teacher
