Mindfulness is an essential tool that children can use to regulate their own emotions, relieve stress and have fun. In this ongoing class students will learn all about mindfulness and participate in mindful exercises that they will be able to then use at home. Students will also learn about mindfulness and the brain and the effects mindfulness has on their ability to solve problems, think critically, and stay focused. Students will leave each class with the tools and strategies they can use to help them stay mindful on their own. The goal of this class is to empower students with mindfulness strategies that they can use on their own within their daily lives.
I am a veteran teacher who has been leading mindfulness discussions in my room for the past 7 years. As a classroom teacher I know how to cultivate a warm and safe place for students to share their experiences and feelings as it relates to their mindfulness practice. I am also trained in social-emotional learning and making sure to create an environment where students are invited to participate in activities and never forced. I am currently certified with a 200-hour Wellness, SEL Mindfulness, and Yoga Teacher Training from Breath for Change. I am also certified with Foundations Training for Mindful Educators.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Ensuring safety and privacy are my top priorities. When students participate in physical fitness activities like yoga, I would like to make sure to advise you (parents) about any potential hazards. These may include the need for an open workout space, proper footwear, the importance of having a water bottle if necessary, and ensuring adequate stretching before the session. In my yoga and mindfulness class, while prioritizing safety, I want to highlight potential injuries that could occur. Common injuries I want to draw attention to may include strains or sprains, especially in the wrists, knees, or back, if poses aren't executed with proper alignment or if I push myself too far. Additionally, overexertion or lack of proper warm-up could lead to muscle pulls or tears. It's crucial for me to listen to my body, practice within my limits, and communicate any discomfort or limitations to the instructor to prevent injuries and ensure a safe practice for everyone involved. In my mindfulness and yoga class, I deeply understand the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for everyone. If unsolicited and highly emotional expressions arise around sensitive topics, my approach is one of compassion and understanding. I will actively listen to the individual without judgment, offering them a space to express themselves freely. I aim to cultivate an atmosphere of empathy and respect, where all participants feel heard and validated. Depending on the situation, I may offer gentle guidance, resources for further support, or simply provide a comforting presence. Above all, my priority is to honor each person's journey and facilitate a healing and inclusive experience for all in the class.
