US Grade 1 - 4
This is a flexible schedule class that will NOT have live meetings. A lesson video and materials will be sent each week and can be viewed on the student’s schedule. Although the class is pre-recorded, the lessons are still interactive. Students are expected to follow along and participate with the material. I will pause for students to say answers and finish tasks. They are to send a photo to me of their completed work through the Classroom page on the website. I will provide feedback for those assignments, as well as respond to any questions or comments. Once a week, a discussion question will be given for the whole group of learners to respond to on the Classroom page as well. I will recommend online games for subtraction practice that can be shared as a group. Interacting with the other learners is a key component of this class and will help your child get the most out of the lessons. Students will also have the opportunity to come up with their own subtraction strategy to share with the group by explanation or video. This type of class is geared toward students who cannot take the live classes on the schedule that I have available. It is also ideal for students who are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the live online format. It may be helpful for an adult to view the lesson with the child to assist with directions and sending completed work to me. Quick recall of basic math facts is essential as students progress into higher level computation. However, for many learners, simple memorization is not effective. They need strategies to figure out answers quickly in ways that make sense to them. A good sense of addition should lead to a complete understanding of subtraction, as well. In these lessons, we will cover simple techniques to decipher the subtraction facts under 20. Students will learn the strategies and then practice them through collaborative games. They will also learn that some math problems can use multiple strategies to determine the answer. After each lesson, the students can take a timed math facts test on their own to show how much quicker this skill is becoming. The course objective is for learners to gain confidence and enjoy the skill of simple subtraction. Week 1: Counting Back Counting Up Week 2: Subtract 10 Half Facts Week 3: Up to 10 Week 4: Review Create your own strategy
Learning Goals
The goal for learners is to gain confidence with their subtraction skills up to 20. We will cover 5 strategies for basic facts and the students will be encouraged to share their own ideas for figuring out hard to recall facts.

I believe learning can be accomplished best when the child is actively engaged and having fun. I like to teach mental strategies that meet individual student learning styles. I have a passion to make math less intimidating and more enjoyable so students can master the basic skills they will use throughout their lives. I like to use games and creative activities to accomplish these goals.
