US Grade 1 - 3
Intermediate Level
In this math class we will work on learning addition and subtraction math facts with automaticity. We will practice facts with addition sums and subtraction differences within 25, adding 10s up to 100, adding 5s up to 100, adding doubles, adding single digit numbers and more! We will practice math facts through interactive games, activities and movement. This class is perfect for students who have a basic understanding of addition and subtraction. We will do a variety of math facts. Some weeks we will focus on automatically knowing one-digit facts within 100, other weeks we will work on two-digit addition/subtraction, adding tens and understanding number patterns. Each week your child will receive supplemental materials after class such as a game, flashcards or homework to help reinforce what we learned in class. Some of it may be a review, and some may be more of a challenge to extend your child's learning. Each week we will practice a variety of math facts including adding nines, doubles facts, doubles +1, and other math facts. We will work on learning math fact strategies to help us visualize the numbers within the base ten system. This class is mostly based on using mental math strategies. We will not be carrying and borrowing two-digit math problems in this class. This class is geared toward 2nd graders, but may benefit many 1st or 3rd graders. Please send me a message if you feel your child would benefit from this class, but is in a different grade level (or you simply want to try it out!). My classroom and teaching style is interactive and engaging. All students will be called upon to participate in various ways either through speaking or showing understanding through movement i.e. put your finger on your nose if you know the answer; everyone shout out the answer; let's do 10 jumping jacks since the answer was 10 etc. Here is how our addition and subtraction math fact class will be structured: Each week may vary, but this is a basic schedule. I was a 2nd grade teacher for many years before joining Outschool. I have also tutored students in reading, math and science after school. In my 2nd grade class, we focused on math facts nearly everyday. I created a classroom environment where learning was fun and engaging and all students were welcomed. I try to make sure all students are able to participate in some way while still respecting their comfort level with a new teacher and new classmates.
