Students will learn about precision and significant figures in a way that is both fun and makes sense. These topics are typically taught poorly, yet students are expected to know these concepts for exams, lab reports, research papers, etc. in science courses such as chemistry. There is a single, hour-long meeting for this class. Pre-requisites: There are no formal course pre-requisites. Students with any interest in science or technology are encouraged to enroll. This is a great class to clear up confusion about significant figures, or "sig figs," which are used in most types of scientific calculations. Class topics: Lecture on the vocabulary of precision and significant figures. We will discuss the practical aspects through several case studies. There will not be any formally assigned and collected homework for this single-meeting course. I will, however, provide attending students with a worksheet and answers, so that they can master this concept which may be important to their work in other classes.
