US Grade Kindergarten - 2
In this ongoing tutoring class, students will receive individualized instruction in math skills needed to be successful in their learning. Younger kids may need help with basic concepts such as counting, grouping, sorting, matching, bigger, smaller and others. As these skills are mastered, mathematical functions such as less than and greater than, addition, and subtraction, multiplication and division will be introduced. Older children may start with mathematical functions, as they may already understand the basic concepts. Again, we will start at your child's level. If help with homework is needed, we can address that, too. Week 1- The instructor will conduct an informal assessment of the child's math ability. This will be accomplished through games and exercises, and by communicating with the child's parent via classroom email or in person at the first class session. I will talk with your child to help build a bond and to find out about their interests both in math and in general. After the first class, the teacher will develop a plan to address learning needs. Parents may request weekly updates. If the student shows proficiency in all areas assessed, additional assessment may be done at the next session to determine next steps to help advance their math leaning. The child's adults will be asked to voice their concerns over the child's math learning, so that these areas can be addressed. For children doing well in math, they may attend these classes strictly for enrichment and new challenges. Week 2 and so on (individualized instruction scaffolded according to child's needs)- The instructor will target specific skills and provide instruction and practice in these each week following the first week. The instructor will maintain communication with adults to see how the instruction is affecting the child's proficiency, and will make adjustments as needed to the curriculum. The teacher develops each class session with the particular student in mind. Every class session is different, and individually tailored to the child. Informal assessment will be used throughout the tutoring sessions to gauge student progress. Subsequent lessons will scaffold, or build upon, learning acquired in previous sessions.
