Class experience
'Making Connections - Christmas 1' is a Christmas themed follow-up to the extremely popular 'Making Connections' series of reading comprehension classes. Students can record their responses if they wish, but the emphasis is on discussion rather than writing. Reading an extract from my own story 'Mystery Gift', we'll start by investigating any unknown vocabulary. Through discussion, we'll make connections between the text and what we already know, in order to gain a greater understanding...
Students will gain a deeper understanding of the text by relating it to their own experiences and existing knowledge. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the text through discussion of their own and others' ideas. Students will learn to make sensible predictions based on what they've read and discussed. Students will learn how to summarize a text. Students will learn that these strategies can be applied to all their reading.
I am an English specialist with 37 years' experience of teaching the subject in UK schools.
Text and response sheet provided by the teacher before class. If you do not have access to a printer, the following materials will be sufficient, although writing is not an essential part of this class: pen / pencil paper / notebook.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The story is about a family giving gifts at Christmas time, and a surprise mystery gift. There is no religious content in the story.
