This ongoing class will cover the key areas which children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts. The emphasis will be on discussion, questioning and searching for meaning. Each week we will study a different fiction or non-fiction text extract, with a focus on one or more of the following skills: Making connections between the text and the students' existing knowledge, in order to gain a greater understanding of the content. Retrieving Information Answering questions like 'Who did...?', 'Where did...?', 'How did...?', 'What happened when...?' Explaining Answering questions like 'Explain how the character got out of trouble.' 'Explain how the character helped his friend.' 'Explain why these animals are under threat of extinction.' Summarizing / Predicting Identifying key words to summarize a text and making predictions beyond the text. Inference 'Reading between the lines' to discover meaning which is implicit rather than explicit in a text. Throughout the classes, students will be taught the importance of questioning and researching the meaning of unknown vocabulary.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to make personal connections with a text, retrieve information, explain their answers, summarize, make predictions and infer meaning. Students will increase their vocabulary knowledge.
